In Commemoration of Osamu Ohno’s Solo Exhibition | Bricolage as Resilience The year is 2012. Ohno traveled to the United States for a two-and-a-half-year residency in New York. Shortly thereafter, in October of the same year, Hurricane Sandy struck New York, one of the world’s largest cities. As Ohno’s official website states, this natural disaster influenced him and has been a major factor in determining the direction of his artistic practice. Hurricane Sandy made landfall on the New Jersey coast and caused extensive damage in New York City and its surrounding areas. In Manhattan, many art galleries in the Chelsea neighborhood were flooded, with water reportedly reaching heights of approximately 1.5 meters in some areas. The disaster was so severe that multiple artworks were damaged or submerged, and some galleries required extensive repairs before they could reopen. The year 2012 marks the year after the Great East Japan Earthquake of 2011. I spoke to Ohno about the 2011 disaster. Living in Kashiwa City, Chiba Prefecture, he witnessed the undulating tremors on houses and the transformation of the city due to planned power outages, describing the scene as a dystopia. His decision to move to the United States due to these experiences and circumstances suggests that his creative work is not limited to self-expression, but is also influenced by social and environmental changes. Ono then traveled to New York, where he unintentionally began his approach of sublimating the chaos of the post-disaster period into assemblage artworks. He brought back chopped logs from giant trees that had fallen in the hurricane and used them as material for his sculptures, beginning his “Chunk” series. His work is inspired by the various materials he encounters in his everyday life. This process, reminiscent of bricolage, demonstrates the dexterity and practice of utilizing readily available materials, as discussed by Lévi-Strauss in his “Savage Mind,” and is how Ohno creates the figurative sculptures he depicts. The act of creating new works from materials destroyed by disaster and scattered disorderly throughout the city goes beyond simple restoration; it can also be said to express “resilience,” the ability to adapt to environmental changes and bounce back from adversity. In this era of natural threats and constant change that Japan and New York faced in the early 2010s, the two disasters that Ohno faced and the bricolage that emerged as a form of resilience may offer important ideas for continuing to reconstruct art and life. Studied sculpture expression at Kyushu Sangyo University and completed graduate studies at Tokyo University of the Arts. During his studies, he primarily researched sculpture using stone, using motifs influenced by academic forms and music to create works with a sense of tension that challenge the very definition of contemporary sculpture. He sees the “impulse” that wells up from within as an important element, and while he uses artificial materials such as waste wood and concrete, his
three-dimensional works are characterized by their strength as “objects” that are by no means frivolous. During a two-and-a-half-year residency in New York from 2012, he developed a bricolage-based creative style, engaging with materials through repeated “destruction and restoration,” exploring the sculptural beauty inherent in the passage of time. In November 2023, ACA (Avex Creator Agency) opened WALL_alternative in Nishi-Azabu, Tokyo, where he will present his first solo exhibition, [VERSE]. Instagram:
