In 2023, Lafcadio Hearn’s great-grandson, Bon Koizumi, told a story to children as part of the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum’s “Summer Vacation Project” in Matsue City, Shimane Prefecture. Based on this story, we have compiled a book of
commonalities and other points.

Micro Magazine, Inc. will release “Learning from Lafcadio Hearn and Shigeru Mizuki: How to Walk in Another World” (supervised by Koizumi Bon, Director of the Lafcadio Hearn Memorial Museum) on Friday, September 12, 2025. Koizumi Yakumo and Mizuki Shigeru are two masters who depicted connections to the “other world,” such as ghosts and monsters. Koizumi Yakumo gave form to ghosts and monsters through literature, while Mizuki Shigeru gave form to ghosts and monsters through manga and illustrations. This book uses abundant illustrations to clearly explain the commonalities between these two masters who made the “invisible (supernatural phenomena)” visible through “literary retellings” and “manga.” This book explores the backgrounds, interests, books, places, and thoughts of these masters, teaching readers the open-mindedness necessary to embrace a world different from the one they know—in other words, a ‘other world.’ It’s a guide to navigating these other worlds and surviving in today’s increasingly international society, where diverse ways of thinking abound. The text is fully illustrated with furigana, making it enjoyable for people of all ages, from adults to elementary school children. This year marks the 10th anniversary of Shigeru Mizuki’s death, and with a drama based on Lafcadio Hearn’s wife, Setsu Koizumi, being broadcast, these two are attracting attention from all walks of life.
