It originated from a Goryoe ceremony, which began as a prayer to quell epidemics, and the events and culture associated with the festival are said to be influenced by Onmyodo. In this article, we’ll discuss the significance of the Gion Festival from the perspective of Onmyodo.

We will also cover the “Yasaka Prayer Ko,” where Shinto priests and Buddhist monks join together to pray for the elimination of epidemics at Yasaka Shrine, which was once a branch temple of Enryaku-ji Temple on Mount Hiei and a place of Shinto-Buddhist syncretism. In the second part, you’ll be able to enjoy a conversation with the lecturer about questions you might have.

After graduating from the Department of Shinto Studies, Faculty of Letters, Kokugakuin University in 1981, He served at Nogi Shrine (Tokyo). In 1993, he was transferred to Yasaka Shrine. After serving as a negi (new priest) at the same shrine in 2005, he became the chief priest in 2021. Every year, he creates the “Gion Calendar,” based on Onmyodo.
