Nishijin Brocade Gold Foil Pattern Pulled Foil MANGA x Nishijin Ori Hyuran. This work is scheduled to be exhibited at EXPO Messe WASSE, the Osaka-Kansai Expo, to be held in October 2025, and at TOKYO TEXTILE SCOPE in November. “Hyuran.” is a work that expresses the panel layout, white space, and flow of time of manga through textiles. The multi-layered structure of silk and foil quietly tells fragments of a story. Granuteau is a unit of teenage creators from Kyoto. Possessing a poetic worldview and delicate compositional skills, this work depicts “the story of two people chasing light in their dreams.” Working with the material of Nishijin-ori, the process by which their expression is brought to life in the weaving is a form of co-creation that transcends generations and techniques. Okamoto Orimono continues to weave using shuttle looms by hand and power looms. “Hikihaku” (gold foil) is a technique that creates light and depth by applying foil to paper and weaving thin strips of it together with silk thread. It is a rare technique that is now practiced only by a limited number of artisans.
