Kanokogi Takeo is a master of modern Japanese Western-style painting. However, his name may not be widely known. The curator in charge passionately wanted to “bring the orthodox realism he learned in Paris, France, to Japan, and have art fans of all ages view the works of this master, who was highly acclaimed at the time, and have them better appreciate his work.” To realize this, we worked with the Izumiya Hakukokan Museum and the Izumiya Hakukokan Museum Tokyo to develop these items. Highlights of the special exhibition include the relationship between his teacher, Laurens, and Kanokogi, embodied in the ballpoint pen, his pursuit of realism in the microfiber cloth, and the artist’s constant gaze on his subjects and his pursuit of their essence in the embroidery on the velvet handkerchief. The special exhibition “Kanokogi Takeo: The Unyielding Path of Oil Painting 151 Years Since His Birth” will be held at the Izumiya Hakukokan Museum (Kyoto) until Sunday, December 14th. The exhibition will travel to the Izumiya Hakukokan Museum Tokyo from Saturday, January 17, 2026 to Sunday, April 5, 2026. The merchandise introduced above will be available at the Izumiya Hakukokan Museum Kyoto from early October, and at the Izumiya Hakukokan Museum Tokyo from mid-January next year, so please enjoy the merchandise along with the special exhibition.
Bijutsutennavi will continue to collaborate with art museums and museums across the country to produce and sell original goods. Please look forward to them.
