The Yokai Art Museum (Shodoshima Healthy Land Co., Ltd.), located in the “Maze Town” (Tonosho Honmachi) on Shodoshima Island in Kagawa Prefecture, will be holding “Shodoshima Halloween in Maze Town” on Saturday, October 25, 2025, in cooperation with Tonosho Town. This marks the fourth annual Halloween event at our museum. This year, as part of the “2025 Tonosho Town Public-Private Partnership Urban Revitalization Promotion Project,” the event is a cross-sectional collaboration between government, private, and related organizations, centering on Shodoshima’s tourist spot, “Maze Town,” and will liven up the area from Tonosho Port to Angel Road. The program includes a Halloween costume contest, a costume parade, trick-or-treating in the Maze Town, a town dialogue session, a fun raffle, and a rice cake toss. Additionally, the main venue will host workshops such as chalk art, face painting, and making original tattoo stickers. There will also be a yokai festival featuring yokai yo-yos and bizarre food scooping, as well as a food truck lineup. Background to the Yokai Museum’s Halloween Event Since 2022, we have been holding various events under the title of “Yokai Halloween Festival” every year from September to October. One of the highlights is a costume contest held in the last week of October. Named after “Kaboso,” a Shodoshima yokai (specter) who excels at “disguising” himself as various things, the “Halloween Costume Grand Prize Kaboso Cup” has become an event that attracts participants from both inside and outside the island. This year also marks the autumn session of the Setouchi Triennale, and we have prepared a number of workshops, including mask-making and chalk art, so that both visitors and residents of the island can enjoy the autumn arts together. Furthermore, this Halloween event will serve as a social experiment to revitalize the town and explore its potential, by attracting tourists and encouraging them to experience the joy of walking around town from Tonosho Port, the island’s gateway, to “Maze Town,” where the Yokai Art Museum is located.
