Jasnet Communications, Inc., an accounting subsidiary of Creek & River Co., Ltd., has published “Accountant’s Magazine Vol. 79,” a human documentary magazine for the accounting industry. Accountants Magazine Website:https://career.jusnet.co.jp/magazine/ The lead interview in this issue is with Tetsuya Mogi, who retired as President of the Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants in July 2025 at the end of his term. Born into a family running a large small factory in Higashi-Nippori, Tokyo, Mogi went on to study Economics at Keio University, where he became fascinated with bookkeeping and decided to pursue a career in accounting as a certified public accountant. After joining Ota Showa & Co. (now EY Ernst & Young ShinNihon LLC), he was part of the audit team of a megabank, where he gained exposure to the field of finance and deepened his understanding to the point of co-authoring a guidebook on financial products. During this time, he also undertook numerous overseas business trips. While building his career at the audit firm, Mogi first became involved in the activities of the Japanese Institute of Certified Public Accountants (JICPA) in 1999 as an expert committee member of the Accounting System Committee. The IAC’s mission was to formulate practical guidelines in accordance with the government’s accounting standards for financial instruments. Since then, he has consistently devoted himself to the IAC’s activities, becoming a director in 2013. However, in 2015, the Toshiba accounting fraud scandal came to light, and the unexpected event occurred when his former firm, Ernst & Young ShinNihon, received a business improvement order from the Financial Services Agency. Mogi was hastily recalled to the firm to take on the role of restructuring the organization. In July 2019, once the firm’s operations had returned to normal, Mogi “returned” to the association and assumed the position of association president in July 2022. “What I wanted most as president was to deepen society’s understanding of accounting by strengthening education,” he said. “If understanding and respect for the profession of certified public accountant increases, people, including the younger generation, will be able to approach their work with even more confidence.” What message does Mogi have for future accountants? Please read the interview tracing his life’s journey. We also cover the accounting industry from various angles, including interviews with accounting departments at listed companies and articles introducing the top talents who will shape the future of audit firms.
