My brother’s ex-wife, daughter, son, and I (his younger sister) will gather together to end his life. –A few days of anger, tears, and a little laughter. “My name is Yamashita and I work in the First Criminal Investigation Division of Shiogama Police Station, Miyagi Prefectural Police. Your brother’s body was discovered this afternoon in Tagajo City.” As I was getting ready to go to bed, I received a call from an unknown number. It was an announcement of the death of my older brother, my only remaining relative and someone I hadn’t seen in years. The first person to discover his body was my elementary school-aged son, who lived alone with him. He is now in the care of a child welfare center. I had a feeling this day would come someday. My brother was a constant nuisance, both financially and emotionally. My brother had been divorced twice, had become ill, had lost his job, and was living in poverty. He had never been able to climb out of the depths of despair, and he died alone. The detective said to me, stunned by the suddenness of what had happened. “We would like you to come to Shiogama Police Station to collect the body.” Includes a new “Afterword to the Paperback Edition,” written five years after the original release.
