Dwarf dwarfs are mysterious creatures that are neither insects, plants, nor animals. They live quietly, unnoticed. While some creatures are known as “endemic species” that live only in specific regions, there are also dwarf dwarfs that adapt to the environment of each region and have their own unique ecology. Books: “The Great Illustrated Encyclopedia of Endemic Species of Dwarfs: Eastern Japan Edition” and “The Great Illustrated Encyclopedia of Endemic Species of Dwarfs “Western Japan Edition” (2024/2025, both published by Rokurinsha) introduces the “endemic species of dwarf reptiles” that live in each of Japan’s 47 prefectures. ■About “Tokoshienoshiawase”

The Tokoshienoshiawase is a dwarf bird native to the area. It usually inhabits the surrounding grasslands, but occasionally appears on the beach. Occasionally, coconuts from southern islands are washed ashore on the Kuroshio Current at Cape Irago. According to one theory, Tokoshienoshiawase’s favorite food is coconuts, which is why they appear on the beach to hunt for them. One distinctive feature is that the shape of each individual’s tochin varies. When two like-minded individuals meet on the beach, they somehow press their tochins together and gaze out at the ocean together. It’s said that witnessing this sight will bring you a good match, and lovers will find happiness. ■About the “Return of the Dwarf Observation Introduction” Video Series In our video series “The Return of the Dwarf Observation Introduction,” we introduce these endemic dwarfs through videos. In the first picture book, the protagonist “I” discovers a mysterious creature called a “Dwarf,” which is neither an insect nor a plant. The visuals are so striking that they can be a bit shocking at first sight, but they have become a classic read in kindergartens, nurseries, and elementary schools, and are loved primarily by children and their families who genuinely believe in the existence of “Dwarfs.” Following the “How to Catch a Dwarf”
instructions introduced in the book and video series, the game of “Spot the Dwarf” has become all the rage among children. Whether or not they exist is a frequent topic of debate, causing concern for mothers and fathers all over Japan. Don’t just say, “There’s no way they exist,” but listen carefully and strain your eyes. I’m sure you, too, can sense the mysterious presence of the Kobito.
