This is an attempt to involve the audience in the creative process, similar to tryout performances on Broadway in the United States. In advance of the theatrical performance “300th Birthday,” songs from the new musical “300th Birthday” will be debuted at a live music event on November 23rd. When a new musical is released on Broadway, it takes several years for it to go through workshops and tryout performances before it even goes on sale. The “300th Birthday” team hopes to further enhance the January performance by revealing and engaging with the audience in the creative process. Therefore, on November 23rd, we will be holding a “live music performance” to unveil the songs used in the musical. Look forward to hearing about the singer pairings and
behind-the-scenes stories that you can only hear at this live performance! Synopsis of the New Musical “300th Birthday” “My grandma’s a mermaid? That’s just a dream.” Kazami is a single woman in her 40s who works at an overseas branch of a foreign company. Despite her successful career, the long-standing feud between her mother, Tae, and her grandmother, Misono, who she left behind in Japan, casts a shadow over her heart. One day, upon receiving news that Misono is critically ill, Kazami returns to Japan. The moment she visits a nursing home, she is enveloped in a mysterious sight—she wakes up at the bottom of the ocean, in a world ruled by mermaids. Misono’s secret, Tae’s conflict, and what Kazami herself has been searching for. The lives of three generations of women are guided toward one truth. The fantastical underwater world is brought to life by Hong Kong lighting and paper artist Sanhool Lau. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, they worked on the unprecedented international musical “Hong Kong Sketch” (Za Koenji / July 2022), which was produced remotely and features a mixture of Japanese, English, and Cantonese. Their second new musical, “300th Birthday,” is scheduled to be performed from January 22-25, 2026, in collaboration with Hong Kong lighting and paper artist Sanhool Lau (Za Koenji 1, partner NPO Theater Creative Network/Za Koenji, Japan Playwrights Association program). Lau’s stage design, woven with light and shadow, breathes life into the story.
