Its history as a gateway to culture and technology from the continent, along with its unique “Uranishi” climate, where the sky changes dramatically throughout the day, from sunny to suddenly raining, has fostered a rich lifestyle unique to the Tango region. In addition to seafood from the Sea of Japan, this area is also blessed with a rich food supply year-round thanks to its thriving agriculture. There are many hidden gems recommended by locals where you can get fresh ingredients, as well as many delicious restaurants. Another attractive feature is that no matter which city or town you live in, you can enjoy the entire Tango Peninsula from a distance. You can easily go to places that you’ll want to visit that aren’t listed in guidebooks, such as sea activities and events related to the sea and food, which can be enjoyed all over Tango. Due to these attractions, the number of people moving to the area has been increasing in recent years. The Tango Peninsula has developed a unique townscape and culture, featuring factories producing Tango Chirimen, a local industry; charred cedar exterior walls used to prevent salt damage; and an increase in mansions built as the industry prospered. However, in recent years, the increase in vacant houses has brought about changes in the city’s landscape and culture. Depending on how they are utilized, vacant houses can become either an asset or a liability for the local community. This time, I would like to discuss the appeal of utilizing vacant houses from various perspectives.

In the Tango region, unique manufacturing techniques have developed while adapting to changing times. However, due to its geographical distance from markets, the role of assessing and delivering value has often been left to outsiders. Looking ahead, we will need the ability to define and communicate our own value. How can we deliver quality products to people who will appreciate them? We will explore this question together with Kusuka’s Kusunoki, who is elevating Tango Chirimen into a fashion brand through ties, shoes and other items, and SKY’s Omori, who creates unique eyeglasses from titanium carved using mechanical metal processing.

The unique climate of this town has also fostered a unique fermentation culture, including sake and seasonings. However, the region is facing a serious shortage of workers, including those responsible for the preservation and management of farmland, and the time may come when Tango residents themselves will no longer be able to purchase Tango rice or fermented foods. Although we won’t be able to do anything right away, I would like to have a frank discussion about designing the relationship between local food and the people who live there, and the future of Tango’s rice and fermentation culture.

Have you all heard of Mix Hitobitotango, commonly known as “Mikutan”? Mikutan, an event that took place over a 10-year period from 2008 to 2018, gave shape to the “things I want to do” of each and every local resident, and saw the implementation of a wide variety of projects. While observing Kyotango recently, I began to think that many changes have been brought about by the projects that were born through Mikutan and the connections that were made there. Seven years have passed since Mikutan ended, so let’s talk together about what has changed, what hasn’t, and what Mikutan was all about in the first place.

Books aren’t the most expensive or cost-effective option, but they can open up new worlds, spark conversations with authors and ourselves, and even provide unexpected relief—they give us so much. It’s strange how, when I visit a local area, I find myself stopping by a bookstore. The joy of discovering a new book, the conversation with the owner, and the selection of books on display can sometimes reveal the character of the place. However, bookstores are becoming scarce even in Tango, and I’ve been thinking about what I can do about it. This time, we will talk about the future of bookmaking and bookstores with Nakaoka from Miwasha Seikatsu Tsuzurikata, a company that produces unique books and runs a bookstore in Yokohama, Adachi, who became a writer after creating a zine, and Yoneda, who is in charge of the “Tango Table of Contents” bookshelf at Machimachi Information Center.

After researching the lives of people living in China and the Mekong region and establishing an overseas base for a human resources startup, he moved to Kyotango City in 2017. Since moving here, he has been working on relocation, running a vacant house consultation service, and running various information centers. Looking at the current situation in Japan and the world, where the speed of information and consumption continues to accelerate due to technology, I thought it would be great if the Tango Peninsula could become an overwhelmingly slow town where a diverse range of creators can continue to exist without rushing, so I launched SLOW.

Born in Shimazu, Amino Town. Mayor of Amino Town Shimazu Union Ward. (Former Kyotango City Ward Mayor Liaison Council Chairman) While serving as a Kyoto Prefectural employee for about 40 years, he was also seconded to Ajiwai no Sato (Third Sector), where he planned and managed events on his own and experienced earning work that civil servants would normally not be able to do. After retiring as a prefectural government employee, he became the representative director of Shiroutonike, a business company that effectively utilizes and manages vacant houses, and the “Shimashima Base” office, which was established with resident volunteers who gathered together to “invigorate the city of Shimazu.”

Amino-machi, Kyotango City, Kyoto Prefecture, is an area located east of the city center, where there are currently less than 500 households and over 1,400 people living there. It faces Hanareko, the largest freshwater lake in Kyoto Prefecture, and is said to have been an island-like area floating in the sea in ancient times.
