TBS-affiliated creative studio THE SEVEN Inc. (headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Katsuaki Setoguchi) to create “Japanese sword action entertainment.” We are pleased to announce that this large-scale project, which will be delivered on a scale never before seen in the history of drama, is “Chirururan: Shinsengumi Requiem,” a drama depicting the Shinsengumi starring Yamada Yuki, and we would also like to provide details on broadcast and streaming information. The first live-action adaptation of the popular comic, which has sold over 3 million copies. The protagonist, Hijikata Toshizo, is voiced by Yamada Yuki. “Chirururan: Shinsengumi Requiem” is a manga by Eiji Hashimoto, known for his powerful touch and impressive artistic ability, and based on the original story by Shinya Umemura, also known for “Record of Ragnarok.” Set in Kyoto during the late Edo period, this popular comic depicts the fierce yet passionate lifestyle of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, with flashy action and a bold interpretation based on historical facts. How did Hijikata Toshizo, a brawler and quick-tempered brat who only sought to be the strongest, meet the talented Kondo Isami and, together with extraordinary warriors like Okita Souji and Saito Hajime, create the Shinsengumi, a group that will go down in history? This first live-action film depicts the lives of these men, who questioned the meaning of their lives during a time of great change and lived their short but vivid lives with a burning passion so strong that they risked their lives for it, with modern, glamorous, and captivating characters and high-speed sword fights that are said to be the fastest in history. This film creates a new Shinsengumi legend like no other before. The protagonist of this story is played by Yuki Yamada, a talented actor who has appeared in a string of popular productions in recent years and is currently leading the Japanese film and drama industry. The madness and passion hidden within his sharp gaze perfectly matches the fierce yet pure soul of the film’s protagonist, Toshizo Hijikata, allowing him to portray the Reiwa era’s Hijikata Toshizo in a way that only he can.

entertainment” presented on an unprecedented scale in the history of drama, filming began in April of this year and took place across the country, including Kyoto, Shiga, Shizuoka, and Chiba. The combination of spectacular locations, rich visual expression, and advanced VFX technology has resulted in a stunning visual experience that only THE SEVEN could achieve. This work will be broadcast on terrestrial television as a special drama on TBS in spring 2026. In addition to the special drama, U-NEXT will exclusively stream the drama series. By linking terrestrial television and streaming, this epic story will reach more people and reach them more deeply. But still, I believe that if I keep doing the unbelievable, one day something unbelievable will happen. I thought that maybe the Shinsengumi were the same. At a time when his friends and he himself were in danger of death, he wanted to change the times, the world. That was all he had in mind… Because he was alive, he could do something. I’m alive, so I have to do something. When I told Producer Morii about these feelings, he said, “Let your frustrations out here.” After that, I wasn’t Toshizo anymore, though. I came to the realization that “the only thing I could do was burn it, let it boil.” Thanks to our wonderful colleagues, we were able to create a “Reiwa Shinsengumi” that only we could. However, I believe the greatest appeal of the original work, “Chirurann: Shinsengumi Requiem,” is that all the characters continue to move forward not to “wither” but to “bloom.” It’s the story of men who lived every moment to the fullest, burning with life in search of their own “place to bloom.” Over the six months of filming, I constantly witnessed the young patriots, including Yamada Yuki, burning with life as they bloomed. I embraced all of it without missing a beat. The filming location was also a tense, serious place where there was no time to blink. ＜Scriptwriter: Masaaki Sakai＞ The Shinsengumi have been portrayed in various genres up until now… but “Chirurann: Shinsengumi Requiem” is different from any of them. If I can fully capture the unconventional charm of the original work, it will become a historical drama like no other. That was my thought when I wrote the script.
