(Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Tenshin Tsutsumi; hereinafter “U-NEXT”) have teamed up for the first time to create the large-scale “TBS × U-NEXT × THE SEVEN Global Project.” The project outline and lead cast are now announced. Total circulation exceeds 3 million copies! This is the first live-action adaptation of the popular comic “Chirururan: Shinsengumi Requiem,” which depicts the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai of the late Edo period. Yamada Yuki plays the protagonist, Hijikata Toshizo, who grows from a rural brat to become a “demon vice-commander”! This work is illustrated by Eiji Hashimoto, known for his powerful touch and impressive drawing skills, and is based on a popular comic by Shinya Umemura, also known for “Record of Ragnarok.” Set in Kyoto during the late Edo period, the work depicts the fierce yet passionate lifestyle of the Shinsengumi, the strongest samurai group, with flashy action and a bold
interpretation based on historical facts. How did Hijikata Toshizo, a brawler and swashbuckler who only sought to be the strongest, meet Kondo Isami and, together with fellow warriors with strong
personalities like Okita Souji and Saito Hajime, create the
Shinsengumi, a group that will go down in history? Their lives, short but vivid, were lived as they questioned the meaning of their lives during a time of great change, and their determination was so strong that they risked their lives for it. Their story, a web of friendship, betrayal, and conviction, is brought to life with modern, vibrant, and captivating character designs and some of the fastest sword fights in history. This film creates a new Shinsengumi legend like no other. The protagonist of this story is played by Yuki Yamada, a talented actor who has appeared in a string of popular productions in recent years and is currently leading the Japanese film and TV industry. He shows a completely different side to each production, captivating audiences with his performances, from terrifyingly intense performances that seem to possess the character to natural, human performances, earning him the immense trust of both the staff and his co-stars. The madness and passion that lies deep within his sharp gaze perfectly

But still, I believe that if I keep doing the unbelievable, one day something unbelievable will happen. I thought that was probably the same for the Shinsengumi. At a time when his friends and he himself were in danger of death, he wanted to change the times, the world. That was all he had in mind… Because he was alive, he could do something. I’m alive, so I have to do something. When I told Producer Morii about these feelings, he said, “Let your frustrations out here.” After that, I wasn’t Toshizo anymore, though. However, after visiting the set and seeing the passion of the director, staff, and actors for the Chiruran film production, I was convinced that my fears were unfounded. And today, as I write this, just this morning, the person in charge showed me the unfinished promotional video, and I was so moved by it that I burst into tears. I am overwhelmed with emotion.
