Galerie Tamenaga is pleased to announce the “Marc Chagall Exhibition” from Saturday, November 8, 2025 to Sunday, December 7, 2025. This exhibition brings together approximately 30 paintings by Marc Chagall (1887-1985), a master of 20th-century art, celebrating the 40th anniversary of his death, to showcase his diverse body of work. Marc Chagall was born in 1887 in Vitebsk, Russian Empire (now Belarus), as the eldest son of a Jewish family. From an early age, he was deeply involved in religion and folk culture, developing a keen sensitivity to mystery and symbolism. As a young man, he studied art in St. Petersburg and in 1910 traveled to the art capital of Paris. There, he lived in the same era as Picasso and Matisse, but he pursued his own unique style of painting, rooted in his Jewish identity. During World War II, he fled Nazi persecution and went into exile in the United States. Despite being at the mercy of history, he moved his artistic base to southern France after the war and continued to expand his range of expression, not only in painting but also in stained glass, stage art, and ceramics. His works repeatedly feature unique motifs that blend memory and imagination, such as lovers flying through the sky, the ancestral landscapes of his hometown, Jewish folklore, animals, and musicians. His rich colors, which earned him the nickname “the magician of color,” are like poetry that expresses mystery, dreams, longing, hope, and even compassion itself, and continue to captivate the hearts of many people today. This exhibition will primarily feature works with bouquets as a motif. For Chagall, bouquets are an important theme symbolizing his art, imbued with diverse meanings such as love, happiness, remembrance, and life. Chagall continued to paint bouquets throughout his life, from his meeting and marriage with his beloved wife, Bella, the birth of his children, his feelings for his hometown of Vitebsk, and even his memorial service after Bella’s death. Galerie Tamenaga has previously presented many of Chagall’s works, and this time we are pleased to present over 30 of his works in one place. We at the gallery are delighted to be able to present Chagall’s works on such a large scale. We hope that through this exhibition you will enjoy Chagall’s unique, fantastical worldview and poetic use of color.
