Atelier e.f.t. believes that the cause of school refusal lies not with the children themselves, but with adults and society. “Tokyo Coffee” was born from this idea. This project aims to create safe and enjoyable spaces across the country for adults and children, and through activities, encourage dialogue about education that leads to “richer lifestyles and societies.” The name comes from an anagram of the word “school refusal” (tokokyohi), and the project launched on August 8, 2022. With the goal of creating “the world’s most fun educational revolution,” the project is spreading as a movement for adults to have fun and discuss issues that will evolve the education system. Tokyo Coffee Official HP ■Children’s peace of mind comes from adults’ smiles At approximately 415 locations nationwide, adults spend their time with smiles on their faces, engrossed in the things they love. This gives children a sense of security and helps them regain their confidence and motivation. This is a place where adults and children alike can be themselves.

Furthermore, in many cases, children who refuse to attend school are treated as “those requiring support,” which makes it difficult for them to feel good about themselves, and seeing their parents struggling can lead to feelings of guilt. Against this backdrop, we also recognized the need for a “place for adults to belong.” With these considerations in mind, Tokyo Coffee began creating a base that simultaneously provides “adult care and awareness change” and “creates a genuine place for children” to fundamentally resolve the issue of school refusal.
