Gahaha Co., Ltd., Producer of “MUSASHI Solo Exhibition of the World” at the Osaka-Kansai Expo Image

The Tokudas accomplished their goal of making MUSASHI’s big day a success. The “MUSASHI Solo Exhibition from Around the World,” held at the Osaka-Kansai Expo in July, featured the participation of approximately 150 companies, organizations, and celebrities, and exhibited approximately 100 collaborative works with the artist MUSASHI. The couple who handled the entire event production and detailed coordination with all parties involved were Kenji and Kumiko Tokuda, representative directors of Gahaha Co., Ltd. (Takatsuki City, Osaka Prefecture).

As a child, he played baseball, drew pictures, and pursued the things he loved, and continued on into adulthood. Kumiko describes him as a “free spirit.” He has a unique background: the band “Smooth” he started in university made its major debut immediately after graduation, but Kenji’s illness forced him to temporarily suspend his band activities in 2016, at which point he founded Gahaha Co., Ltd. He has now recovered from his illness and is continuing his band activities at his own pace while also working as Gahaha Co., Ltd. How I became involved in the “MUSASHI Solo Exhibition of the World” The opportunity arose from the support of An introduction from Community Bank Kyoshin (Kyoto Shinkin Bank). Tokuda Kenji met Shimizu Kenta (affiliated with TSUNAGU DAO), one of the directors of the Expo Musashi Solo Exhibition Secretariat, and the relationship between the two deepened when he exhibited a MUSASHI works booth at the popular Takatsuki Gourmet Picnic, an event held annually in Takatsuki city by Gahaha Co., Ltd., which is chaired by the executive committee. Mr. and Mrs. Tokuda resonated with the philosophy of and joined the
organization. They later joined the Expo Musashi Solo Exhibition Secretariat four months before the “World Musashi Solo Exhibition” was held.

The essential desire to “make Musashi’s big day a success” was At first glance, Kumiko appears to be a superwoman, handling an incredible amount of communication and administrative work with a cool demeanor. “I joined the already established team of Musashi Expo Solo Exhibition Secretariat four months before the event, and started off not knowing anything about MUSASHI or the other members of the secretariat. I felt pressure to take on this position of bringing the whole thing together, not knowing anything about how the team had gotten to that point. I spent the first two months getting to know everyone, and with less than two months to go until the event, I thought, ‘this is no longer the time to be worrying’, and jumped in.” During the event, Kumiko acts as a mother figure, handling detailed inquiries and giving instructions, while Kenji steps in as a father figure at crucial moments to calm the situation. They make an excellent pair.
“Surprisingly, if you try to put together an event, it will somehow come together. But an event that just ‘just works’ ends up with a lot of complaints and mistakes, and it’s exhausting. Instead, I think the job of a professional is to make sure the event turns out exactly as envisioned and finishes on schedule. But with this solo exhibition, I think that still wasn’t enough. I think we were able to get this far because we had the determination to make Musashi’s big day a success,” says Kenji. It was only after the exhibition that it finally dawned on him. “It was only after the exhibition was over that I realized, ‘I’d created an amazing event at the Expo together with some of the world’s best people.’ Looking back, I realized that every single decision, including the design and setup of the event venue, was correct. We’d discussed and decided on many things at the secretariat, but I was also amazed at the judgment of President Nakai, who made the final decisions on each and every one of them.” In the future, Ishitomi Property Co., Ltd. plans to publish a booklet introducing MUSASHI’s art activities, with the Expo solo exhibition as the inaugural issue, and Gahaha Co., Ltd. will be in charge of all production.
