Image Studio Ichimarukyu Inc. (Meguro-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Yoshimi Abe)’s “109 Subtitle Production Service PLUS” has been awarded the 2025 Good Design Award (sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion). At “109 Subtitle Production Service PLUS,” our specialized subtitling staff works with a variety of hearing-impaired individuals (deaf, hard of hearing, newly deafened, etc.) to evaluate and analyze subtitle content while taking into consideration the intent and quality of commercials and recommend areas for improvement. In addition to our existing subtitle services, we were recognized for designing subtitles that accurately convey the intent of the content to those who are hearing impaired or have difficulty hearing. We will continue to work to further expand the use of commercial subtitles, aiming to realize a society without information divides. ■Evaluation comments from the Good Design Award judges The project was recognized for its participation in the creation of commercial subtitles by people with hearing impairments, creating a system that reliably conveys commercial images that would be difficult for hearing-sounding viewers to imagine on their own. In Japan, there are approximately 34 million people with hearing impairments or hard of hearing, yet commercial subtitles remain inadequate. By incorporating the perspectives of those with hearing impairments, this initiative could improve the quality of subtitles and become a new standard for narrowing the digital divide. Subtitles are designed to accurately convey the intent through ingenious techniques such as speaker identification, furigana for brand names, and background music notation. ■What is the Good Design Award? This award, which inherits the Good Design Product Selection System established in 1957, is Japan’s leading design evaluation and promotion program. As a global design award attended by many companies and organizations both in Japan and overseas, it is held annually with the aim of improving the quality of life and utilizing design to solve social issues and themes.
