relationship between materials and time The ALIEN Art Centre, located in Kaohsiung, a port city in southern Taiwan that boasts the country’s largest trading port and has recently been rediscovered as a hub of art and culture. This year’s “Dust and Gold – A Solo Exhibition by Makoto Fujimura and Shozo Michikawa,” is the first collaborative exhibition in Taiwan by contemporary abstract expressionist artist Makoto Fujimura and ceramicist Shozo Michikawa. The exhibition explores the theme of “materiality,” a topic that has recently attracted attention at global art museums such as London’s Tate Modern and New York’s Guggenheim. Through a collection of works spanning from 1992 to 2025, the exhibition poetically explores the relationship between “time” and “materiality” through painting, ceramics, and sound installations. Since its founding in 2019, TAKANOME has been pursuing various initiatives, considering its brand mission to “contribute to the development of culture through sake.” In 2022, the company collaborated with ceramic artist Shozo Michikawa and presented its sake at the Cannes Film Festival in France. In 2023, the company sponsored events in New York and Los Angeles, among other cultural activities. Since 2024, the company has strengthened its activities in Taiwan, collaborating with art fairs and local restaurants, and striving to create new value through sake, Japanese culture, and cross-cultural fusion. This latest event is another attempt to embody the philosophy of these cultural activities. During the exhibition, sake vessels from the collaborative collection between Michikawa and TAKANOME, as well as limited edition sake labels, will also be on display. ■Exhibition overview Exhibition Name: Dust and Gold – Makoto Fujimura, Sanshuang Dochuan Solo Exhibition Venue: ALIEN Art Center (Kaohsiung) Period: ・《The Luminous Chapter》 September 28, 2025 – April 6, 2026 ・《The Formative Chapter》April 15, 2026 – August 30, 2026

contemporary art museum was created by revitalizing the former Jinma Hotel, a former naval officer’s barracks built in 1958. Located at the foot of Mount Shoushan, a symbol of Kaohsiung City, it was once a strategic location for the Taiwanese Navy and is known as a historic building that played a vital role in Taiwan’s postwar modernization. After being closed for many years, the building was restored under the leadership of the YUIMOM Group, a leader in cultural heritage preservation and restoration projects in Taiwan. Based on the concept of “preserving the memories of the past while creating a space that supports the creation of the future,” the Jinma Hotel was given new life in 2018 as the ALIEN Art Centre. The tranquil space, which makes use of the texture of the heavy concrete architecture and the original design, quietly exudes “time” and “memory.” Since its opening, the museum has hosted numerous exhibitions and installations by domestic and international artists, and as an art space that reconsiders the relationship between people and place through “time, memory, and materials,” it has become a symbol of cultural regeneration in southern Taiwan. ⬛︎Official website: https://www.alien.com.tw/en ■Official Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/alien_art_centre/ ⬛︎A one-night-only executive dinner with Yamazaki, a Japanese restaurant that inherits the spirit of its Toyama main branch. Yamazaki, a Japanese restaurant beloved in Toyama for a quarter of a century and awarded two Michelin stars, moved to a new location in Nihonbashi, Tokyo in 2023. This renowned restaurant is known for its kaiseki cuisine, which makes use of the natural beauty and seasonal bounty of the Hokuriku region. In Tokyo, it continues to thrive, honouring its traditions with delicate dishes that combine urban sensibilities with artisanal techniques. For this executive dinner, we prepared a special menu to capture the atmosphere of early autumn, allowing guests to fully enjoy the aromas of the season. Guests were treated to Japanese cuisine featuring seasonal ingredients and meticulous craftsmanship, including a hot pot of matsutake mushrooms and conger eel, plumply braised eel, and soba noodles seasoned with sesame and garnished with chrysanthemum flowers. TAKANOME further enhanced Yamazaki’s meal with a pairing of their signature “Takanome” sake with two types of “undersea aged sake” aged at different times for different periods. Yamazaki commented, “TAKANOME’s flavor was so striking that it changed my concept of sake. I personally incorporate the essence of Japanese culture into each and every dish, and I hope to continue to share the wonder of Japanese culture with the world through our mutual expression.” The evening carefully woven together the “Japaneseness” that both parties hold dear, embodying the depth and pride of Japanese culture in every dish and every glass.
