https://prcdn.freetls.fastly.net/release_image/81580/8/81580-8-b8416ee238acfe0dcd83aca39eb5e630-309×376.jpg “Kobito Zukan” is a picture book series by Nabata Toshitaka and its companion series (published by Rokurinsha) that will celebrate its 20th anniversary in 2026. In the first picture book, the protagonist “I” discovers a mysterious creature called a “Dwarf,” which is neither an insect nor a plant. The visuals are so striking that they can be a bit shocking at first sight, but they have become a classic read in kindergartens, nurseries, and elementary schools, and are loved primarily by children and their families who genuinely believe in the existence of “Dwarfs.” Following the “How to Catch a Dwarf”
instructions introduced in the book and video series, the game of “Spot the Dwarf” has become all the rage among children. Whether or not they exist is a frequent topic of debate, causing concern for fathers and mothers all over Japan. Don’t just say, “There’s no way they exist,” but listen carefully and strain your eyes. I’m sure you too will sense the mysterious presence of the dwarfs.
