The Yokohama Museum of Art will hold a special exhibition titled “Always Nearby: Japan and Korea, 80 Years of Art” as the finale of its reopening commemorative exhibition. Japan and Korea have a long history as close nations, both geographically and culturally. K-Culture, including dramas, movies, music, fashion, and makeup, has taken the world by storm, making Korean culture increasingly familiar and indispensable to us. Wouldn’t you like to learn more about our neighboring country? This exhibition aims to explore the relationship between Japan and Korea through art from two countries with rich histories. To better understand the characteristics of something, there’s a very simple way: compare it to something else. This method is also effective when understanding art. “Because we’re always next to each other,” we inspire each other, sometimes causing tension. Historical tensions and political friction are not easily overcome. However, using art as a gateway to think about our neighbors and reexamine ourselves can surely provide courage and insight for living together in the future. This exhibition is co-curated with the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, to mark the 60th anniversary of the normalization of diplomatic relations between Japan and South Korea in 1965. At the same time, following “Welcome Back, Yokohama” and “Masahiko Sato Exhibition: A New X (How to Make How to Understand),” this exhibition expresses the Yokohama Museum of Art’s reopening philosophy of “multicultural coexistence and respect for diversity.”

After its Yokohama run, it will also be held at the National Museum of Contemporary Art, Gwacheon from May 2026. 2. Approximately 160 works by over 50 artists from both Japan and Korea In addition to 19 excellent pieces from the collection of the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea, you can also see works being shown in Japan for the first time and new works created specifically for this exhibition. 3. The first large-scale international exhibition to trace the unknown history of the relationship between the two countries through art This is the first exhibition to unravel the history of Japanese-Korean art relations since 1945. Through the art of both countries, we look at where we are now and the future we will live in together.
