The “Japan 47 Yokai Stroll” serial page (reporting, writing, and design by Yuka Morii) on Kobunsha’s “Japan 47 Yokai Stroll” has been awarded the 2025 Good Design Award (sponsored by the Japan Institute of Design Promotion). The series selects one yokai from each prefecture from thousands of folklore and creates a unique interpretation. This yokai character is a travelogue page that guides readers through the fascinating nature and delicious food of various parts of Japan. This award-winning work will be exhibited at the “GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2025,” an event showcasing all the winners of the “2025 Good Design Award,” to be held at Tokyo Midtown in Roppongi, Tokyo from November 1st (Sat) to 5th (Wed). Comment from the Award-Winning Designer: 3D Sculptor Yuka Morii “I’m in charge of creating, researching, and writing about yokai. As someone who grew up reading magazines, I’m incredibly happy that this is probably the first time a magazine serial has won this award. Knowing yokai is knowing Japan. By exploring the lore of yokai, you can learn what the land values and what it has eaten, leading to a deeper understanding of Japan. I’ll continue working hard on this project, hoping to help travelers both at home and abroad discover the hidden charms of Japan.” [Yuka Morii Profile] 3D sculptor/character designer/author President of Yuka Design, Inc. Graduated from Kuwasawa Design School. Completed graduate studies at Tokyo Zokei University Graduate School. He has worked on illustrations for the Pokémon Trading Card Game, designed the “Koneko Cup” and “Nego,” and directed the “NenDo!” clay play set. He is the author of numerous publications. Evaluation Comments from the Good Design Award Jury The designer’s interpretation of yokai dolls is charming. The clever development, which begins with episodes of Japan’s diverse yokai folklore and introduces the region’s history, local cuisine, festivals, and other traditional culture, leading to a journey, is captivating. The designer’s writing style and information gathering ability, which can only be achieved by personally visiting and experiencing the region, are also appealing. The yokai folklore of various parts of Japan are deeply connected to the local climate and culture and are full of diversity. This unique project promotes travel in Japan to people both in Japan and abroad from an unprecedented perspective. What is the Good Design Award?
