Press release: October 23, 2025 To Members of the Press [What are you doing on substitute holidays for sports days and other events? 】Most people use substitute holidays for “little outings” or relaxing at home / IkoYo Family Lab Take advantage of your precious holiday break and get active by visiting theme parks, aquariums, and zoos!

(Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo; CEO: Takamichi Shimomoto; hereinafter referred to as “Act Indy”), operator of “IkoYo,” one of Japan’s largest websites for information on outings with children, conducted a survey and analysis on “The situation regarding substitute holidays for sports days and other events” through the “IkoYo Family Lab,” which sheds light on real parent-child behavior through surveys and interviews. <Topics> ▶On substitute holidays for sports days and other events, the majority of people choose to “relax at home or nearby.” ▶There are also “active people” who take advantage of weekdays. ▶ “Long-distance trips” are a minority, with day trips the mainstream ▶ Summary The mainstream trend is “relaxing at home or nearby.” When we conducted a survey on how people spend compensatory holidays due to school or kindergarten events, the most common answer was “going to a nearby park or facility” (47.8%), followed by “relaxing at home” (35.7%). How do you usually spend compensatory holidays due to events at your child’s school, nursery school, or kindergarten? (Multiple selections possible) 1. 47.8% go to nearby parks or facilities 2. 35.7% relaxing at home 3. 34.7% visit theme parks, zoos, aquariums, etc. 4. 27.9% travel a little further by car or train 5. 20.4% have never experienced a substitute holiday 6. 12.6% go on a trip 7. 10.7% use daycare or after-school care at daycare centers because their parents are working. 8. 4.9% of children go out alone with friends This indicates that more than half of households choose to relax and unwind at home or nearby, rather than traveling far away during long holidays. There are also “active” people who take advantage of weekdays. Among those who prefer more active outings, “going to theme parks, zoos, aquariums, etc.” (34.7%) is also gaining popularity. This figure is roughly the same as “relaxing at home,” suggesting that many families are taking advantage of the benefits of a substitute weekday holiday. Also, visiting popular attractions within a day trip on a relatively quiet weekday feels special, but doesn’t require the extensive preparation required for an overnight trip, making it a popular “mini-outing day.” Please tell us about places you have actually visited on a substitute holiday. (Multiple selections possible) 1. Parks/open spaces 42.0% 2. Theme
park/amusement park 34.2% 3. Shopping mall 33.3% 4. Aquarium/Zoo 30.6% 5. Indoor playgrounds (children’s centers, kids’ parks, etc.) 24.3% 6. Museum/Science Museum 18.4% 7. Cinema 14.8% 8. Home/Relatives’ home 14.1% 9. Seasonal events (illuminations, fireworks displays, festivals, etc.) 9.2% 10. Museums and cultural facilities 8.5% 11. Factory tours and field trips: 6.8% 12. I don’t go out 6.6% 13. Experience facilities (harvesting experiences, pottery, workshops, etc.) 5.1% 14. Camping/Outdoor 3.4% “Going on trips” is a minority trend, with day trips the mainstream The results show that spending time away from home, such as “going on a trip” (12.6%) or “going a little further by car or train” (27.9%), is relatively rare. Summary This survey suggests that, unlike Golden Week and Obon holidays, substitute holidays tend to be focused on daytime activities, taking into consideration the preparations and burden on parents. For many families, substitute holidays are typically used for “short outings” to nearby parks or popular attractions, a “special but not too strenuous” outing nearby. Sports day news! Check out this survey too! 90% of events are shortened to half a day or less, with no family lunches provided.

Hearing such voices, IkoYo Family Lab conducted an IkoYo monitor survey and is presenting the results in detail! A “new trend” in sports days is emerging. With increased awareness of reducing the burden on schools and kindergartens in the wake of heatstroke prevention measures and the COVID-19 pandemic, check out the “new format of sports days” that has changed significantly from the traditional format through data and comments from parents! heartwarming sight to watch. However, in recent years, some media and social media have taken up the new term “cheer section harassment” (o-hara) to refer to “excessive cheering” or “excessive interference and pressure on other parents and children,” causing a stir. We conducted a survey to find out how aware parents are of “o-hara” and what they value when cheering. Here are our findings. Is there “cheer section harassment”?
