Miya Kida, the wife of a former samurai retainer, has a dream while sick in bed. This is Pontocho in Kyoto, the place where the young man Yoshida Toshimaro, whom he never forgot, died. As Tsumaki follows the shadows of young patriots who lived through turbulent times, such as Katsura Kogoro, Sakamoto Ryoma, and Kondo Isami, he traces his encounter with Toshimaro, his parting, and his tragic final moments. Set in Kyoto, shaken by the storms of the late Edo period, the story of a young man swept up in the torrent of the times is now revived.
