Hans Wegner (1914-2007) is considered a key figure not only in the field of mid-century Danish design, but also in the history of 20th-century furniture design. His signature works, The Chair (1949) and Y Chair (1950), are highly popular and many people have likely seen them. Wegner, who possessed exceptional talent as a furniture craftsman and a deep insight into materials, created more than 500 chairs throughout his lifetime. This exhibition, brought together approximately 160 chairs and other pieces of furniture in one place, is the largest retrospective of Wegner’s work ever held in Japan. It was held with the cooperation of Higashikawa Town, Hokkaido, home to the collection of Kenji Oda, a world-renowned chair researcher and collector of modern furniture, primarily from Scandinavia. What is the appeal of Wegner, a man regarded as a master of design and beloved to this day? With the exhibition designed by internationally acclaimed architect Tsuyoshi Tane (ATTA), we will look back on his achievements and design philosophy through a wealth of his works and related materials. For more details, please visit the exhibition’s website. 【Profile of Noritsugu Oda】 Chair researcher and professor emeritus at Tokai University. Born in Kochi Prefecture in 1946. He began collecting chairs while working in the advertising department of Takashimaya Department Store. Since then, for over half a century, he has been researching and collecting modern furniture, particularly 20th century Scandinavian furniture, and has continued his work with the basic principle of using it as everyday items. In 1994, he moved to Hokkaido with his collection. In 1997, he received the Danish Furniture Award. In 2015, he was unanimously awarded the first Hans Wegner Award by the jury for “continuing to present the results of his research on Wegner to the world and making a significant contribution to improving Wegner’s current reputation.” [Ticket Information] Early bird tickets go on sale from Wednesday, October 15th. ◎Sales period: October 15th (Wednesday) – December 1st (Monday) *Tickets are available from December 2nd (Tuesday) to January 18th, 2026 (Sunday) ◎Admission fee (tax included) General University/high school student Junior high/elementary school students Early bird ticket 2,100 yen 1,300 yen 500 yen Admission ticket 2,300 yen 1,500 yen 700 yen *If you are purchasing a student ticket, please present your student ID.
