Since the publication of the first book, “Daruma-san ga,” in 2008, the “Daruma-san” series (created by Hiroshi Kagakui) has been a hit, earning readers the reputation of making even crying children laugh. After working as a special needs school teacher, he made his debut as a picture book author at the age of 50. His themes, which are written from a child’s perspective, his heartwarming illustration style, and his wordplay set to the rhythm of children’s songs have garnered overwhelming popularity. He passed away suddenly from illness in 2009. The 16 picture books he illustrated over a four-year period are still read by many children today.
