Project background
The Scully family, the founding family of Clonakilty Distillery, have been growing barley on their homestead for nine generations. The high-quality barley produced in a rich natural environment has supported nearby breweries as a primary industry for many years. Since establishing the distillery in 2018, we have worked to create a new trend in the history of Irish whisky, while aiming for sustainable production activities, and there has been respect for the quality and commitment to manufacturing from raw materials. Also, we have always been interested in the rich world of beer barrel aging, and have been waiting for the right time. I would like to once again thank Mr. Yudai Matsuzaki of Matsuzaki Liquor Store for this opportunity. Regarding the collaboration”|Comments from each company
Embassy of Ireland in Japan Damian Cole, Ambassador of Ireland to Japan We are very excited to announce this collaboration between Clonakilty Distillery, a leader in the Irish whiskey industry, and Coed Brewery, which brings sustainable craft beer from Saitama to the world. I’m happy. The launch of this collaborative beer marks the beginning of a unique partnership that combines Irish craft whiskey expertise with Japan’s outstanding brewing techniques. Through this project, we believe that not only will both companies be able to improve their pursuit of quality and take on new business challenges, but it will also serve as an opportunity to further develop the two countries of Ireland and Japan, going beyond the companies themselves. We are looking forward to the release of this collaboration whiskey next year. We believe this project will not only create new
opportunities for Clonakilty Distillery and Coed Brewery, but will also raise the profile of Irish whiskey in Japan and deepen the ties between Japan and Ireland. Joe Moore, Japan Manager, Bord Bia, Food Agency of Ireland Bord Bia’s mission is to support the sustainable growth of Ireland’s food and drink exports. In fact, Irish whiskey exports to Japan in 2022 increased by 9% to €3.2 million. We are delighted to be supporting this collaboration between Clonakilty Distillery and Coed Brewery. Forging partnerships between Irish distillers and global producers like Coed Brewery shows the potential for Irish whisky. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for both companies, and we wish this project success. Michael Scully, CEO, Clonakilty Distillery At Clonakilty Distillery, whiskey is at our core. We grow our barley on the edge of the Atlantic Ocean, where the salt spray and salty soil give the grain its unique character. Our casks are stored in warehouses 60 meters above sea level, and the maturation process imparts a unique local flavor to both the casks and the whisky. Coedo Brewery is in natural harmony with us, and our founder’s agricultural roots resonate with us. They use discarded sweet potatoes to make superior beer, a natural and organic process that echoes Clonakilty’s sustainable practices. Through the artful blending of our individual spirits, we are united by a shared commitment to quality, innovation and craftsmanship. This is the first collaboration of its kind between a craft Irish whiskey distillery and a Japanese craft brewery, and we believe there will be many more exciting joint projects to come. Shigeharu Asagiri, President and CEO of Kyodo Shoji Coedo Brewery COEDO is an agricultural brewery originally established by Kyodo Shoji Co., Ltd., which has been engaged in organic farming since the 1970s. Beer production began in 1996, and the idea was to make effective use of barley that had been spread as green manure in organically grown fields and plowed into the fields without being harvested. As a result of a feasibility study at the time, they gave up on barley and began brewing beer using sweet potatoes, a local agricultural product that had been discarded as substandard, as an accessory ingredient. I learned that Clonakilty, which I met this time, is a craft whiskey distillery established by nine generations of barley farmers to create a new Irish whisky, and I immediately felt empathy and respect for its background and
activities. . In Japan, the freshness of beer is important, but it is also possible to enjoy the evolution of flavor over time through aging. By aging COEDO beer in wooden barrels containing Clonakilty whiskey from Ireland, the beer takes on the atmosphere of the whiskey barrel and the changes in flavor that occur over time. The barrels then returned to Ireland from Japan, and this time Clonakilty’s whiskey took on the atmosphere of COEDO beer. And now, we have started cultivating barley ourselves and have become agricultural producers. The fusion of the two and the creation of wonderful products will become an ongoing endeavor and will foster friendship between Japan and Ireland.

Using traditional Irish methods, the spirit is triple distilled to achieve a smooth and delicate finish. The whiskey is then aged in an Atlantic warehouse 200 meters above sea level. We believe the influence of Clonakilty’s natural environment is what makes our whiskys so special.
