Yumeji Local Art Museum Main Building (Location: 2-1-32 Hama, Naka-ku, Okayama City, Okayama Prefecture, Director: Mitsunobu Kojima, Operated by: Ryobi Cultural Promotion Foundation) will be holding a special event from Tuesday, December 5, 2023. We will be holding a special exhibition titled “Matsuda Hajime Collection XIII: Yumeji
Masterpieces Exhibition / Special Exhibition of Beautiful Women”. At the “Matsuda Hajime Collection,” held every winter, collections other than Yumeji’s works are specially opened to the public, and Yumeji’s works selected by the museum’s children’s curators are displayed along with explanatory notes handwritten by the children. In this special exhibition, you can see portraits of women created by painters who were active at the same time as Yumeji Takehisa, who will celebrate his 140th birthday in 2024. Beautiful paintings by artists who were active in Japan and abroad, including the works of Kunishiro Mitsutani (1874-1936), who will celebrate his 150th birthday in the same year, and Tsuguharu Fujita (1886-1968), who will celebrate his 55th anniversary in 2023. Exhibition Overview: The museum’s founder and first director, Motoi Matsuda (1921-1998, former representative of the Ryobi Group), believed that “As a businessman, my mission is to contribute to culture,” and this work is currently owned by the Yumeji Museum of Art. He built the foundation of a collection centered on the outstanding hand-drawn works of Yumeji Takehisa (1884-1934), and also collected other works of art with his unique aesthetic eye. Matsuda came across the works of Yumeji Takehisa at a used bookstore in Osaka in 1951, and was captivated by his poetic works, and began collecting them in hopes of finding a way back home. The Yumeji Folk Art Museum was established in Yumeji’s hometown of Okayama.
At the “Matsuda Hajime Collection,” held every winter, collections other than Yumeji’s works are specially opened to the public, and Yumeji’s works selected by the museum’s children’s curators are displayed along with explanatory notes handwritten by the children. This year, the 13th time the exhibition will be held, we will exhibit works selected by the 12th children’s curators, as well as
masterpieces such as the folding screen “Ichiriki” and “Kotatsu,” which are among the largest of Yumeji’s works.

At the Yumeji Museum of Art, we have “Children’s Curators,” ranging from elementary school students to university students. Among those who participated in the Children’s Yumeji Newspaper in previous years, we are inviting those who want to learn more about Yumeji and art to experience workshops and explanations of his works.

The Yumeji Ambassador, who has worked as a children’s curator for over three years, will guide you through the Yumeji Folk Art Museum’s works and recommended spots.
