Nikkei reaches 1 million digital subscriptions; electronic
version/specialized media spreads to corporations

The number of subscriptions to digital paid media such as the “Nihon Keizai Shimbun electronic version” and the specialized media “NIKKEI Prime” series provided by Nihon Keizai Shimbun (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo, President: Tsuyoshi Hasebe) has exceeded 1 million. Ta. The use of the electronic version has expanded from individuals to corporations and the educational field, and the development of specialized media from 2020 onwards will develop new demand and continue to grow in the digital domain.
This is the first time for a paid news outlet in Japan to exceed 1 million. The number of paid subscribers for the electronic version is 897,000, and the number of digital subscriptions other than the electronic version is 115,000, about twice as many as three years ago. Combined with the English-language publication “Nikkei Asia,” the total was 1.07 million. Among the paid news media of newspaper companies in the world, it ranks fifth after the Nikkei Group’s British Financial Times (FT), and when combined with the FT, it is the third largest in the world with 3.26 million people.

The Nikkei electronic version, which was launched in March 2010, has grown to be aimed at individuals, but in recent years it has been increasingly adopted by corporations and the educational sector. 24,500 companies have adopted “Nikkei Electronic Edition FOR OFFICE,” which provides companies with a combination of multiple media from the Nikkei Group. “Nikkei Digital Edition for Education” is being introduced by junior high and high schools as inquiry-based class materials. From 2020 onwards, we will accelerate the development of specialized media. In 2020, we launched “NIKKEI Financial”, a media specializing in finance, and in 2022, we launched 3 media, including “NIKKEI Mobility”, which specializes in the automobile industry, as the “NIKKEI Prime” series. More and more companies are turning to specialized media on a large scale to obtain information essential to their business.
Growth in new digital media such as the “NIKKEI Prime” series The growth in the number of paid digital subscriptions, centered around the Nihon Keizai Shimbun electronic version, has been driven by the development of new media with deeper specialization and the expansion of the readership. We continue to evolve both our services and content to meet various needs. In order to meet the diversifying needs of our readers, Nikkei has been launching new digital media one after another since 2020.
NIKKEI Financial, the first specialized media aimed at executives and professionals working in the financial industry, was launched in October 2020 and is celebrating its third anniversary this year. In addition to our in-depth articles based on extensive research, we also hold members-only events with key financial figures as guests, and we have gained support from many readers involved in finance.
In November 2022, we will launch NIKKEI Prime, a new medium that will deliver information that cannot be conveyed in the morning and evening editions or electronic versions.
We have started the series. The first installment is “NIKKEI Mobility,” which focuses on the automobile industry, and “NIKKEI GX | Green Transformation,” which explains policies and systems aimed at decarbonization, as well as advanced efforts by domestic and foreign companies. Launched three media outlets, “NIKKEI Tech Foresight,” which explains promising technologies. We have been able to deliver the latest domestic and international trends in each specific field to business people who are responsible for decision-making in companies. In March 2023, we will launch “NIKKEI FT the World,” which will deliver carefully selected FT articles in Japanese. In order to meet the needs of people who want to “understand the essence of news in a short amount of time,” we started offering “Minutes by NIKKEI,” a new media aimed at young people, in November 2023.
Nikkei/FT becomes world’s 3rd largest news media group
Looking at the number of paid members and subscriptions of digital news media around the world, the New York Times in the US ranks first with 9.41 million*1. Second place goes to the US Dow Jones (4.61 million) *2, which handles American newspapers such as the Wall Street Journal, and third place goes to the US Washington Post (2.5 million) *3. FT is in fourth place with 2.19 million, and Nikkei-FT Group, which includes Nihon Keizai Shimbun, has 3.26 million, ranking third in the world.
Nihon Keizai Shimbun acquired the UK-based Financial Times Group from UK-based Pearson in 2015, and has been pursuing growth strategies such as enriching its global coverage and expanding its digital business. We will continue to strengthen our collaboration to create synergies. The number of digital paid subscriptions includes the number of paid members of “Nihon Keizai Shimbun electronic version”, the number of paper viewer subscriptions of “Nikkei Sangyo Shimbun”, “Nikkei MJ”, “Nikkei Veritas”, “Human Resources Watch”, “NIKKEI Financial”, “NIKKEI Prime” This is the sum of the number of contracts.
