“Manjuraku”, which was called “Tenchoraku”, “Chojuraku”, and “Hojuraku” during the Heian period, is an auspicious dance. Just by listening to the auspicious music and dancing, you will be transported to the gorgeous world of paradise. It is said that this song was played when Buddhism was introduced to China from India, with scriptures carried on a white horse. It was introduced along with Karyobin (a dance of birds living in the Pure Land) when Todaiji Temple was built, but it is a “phantom” dance that requires a great deal of skill and there is no record of it being performed in its entirety since modern times. Based on the old records of the National Theater, our association attempted to restore the entire theater by making use of its stage performance. Please enjoy the new year with the unique sounds of gagaku, such as the sho and hichiriki.
The helmet that is specially used in this dance and has a glittering “three circles of gold and arabesque” is a symbol of its high status.
[Video 2: https://prtimes.jp/api/movieim.php?url=www.youtube.com/watch?v=knq66xrm5kQ] The splendor of the nine suites in which the dancers perform a series of movements in each scene is the culmination of bugaku, which has been handed down to the present day. is amazing. The ryuteki, which plays solo at the beginning of the dance, will be played by our association’s representative, Shoroku Tanaka (person of meritorious contribution to local traditional culture).
