Sunshine Aquarium (Ikebukuro, Tokyo, director: Katsushi Maruyama) will be holding an event called “Trilling Deep Sea Creatures 2024”, which will be held for the 8th time, from January 12th (Friday) to March 17th (Sunday), 2024. ) will be held during the period.

In general, the deep sea refers to areas deeper than 200 meters where only a small amount of light reaches, and covers approximately 95% of the entire ocean. The creatures that live in the deep sea have adapted to the harsh environment of “darkness,” “coldness,” and “high water pressure,” and have evolved in unique ways to survive. The theme of this event is “Far but close!? I want to get closer to the world of the deep sea.” We will explain the deep sea environment and the characteristic appearances of deep sea creatures in an easy-to-understand manner through displays of living organisms and specimens.
In addition, the keyword rally “Shokuzoku Deep Sea Quest” will be held in the aquarium, a special space where you can feel closer to the deep sea, after the aquarium is closed, and will be held only for visitors. (After normal business hours on February 11th (Sunday), 25th (Sunday), and March 10th (Sunday))
In addition, there is plenty of content that will allow you to experience the deep sea world more deeply, including the “Exciting Deep Sea Tour 2024” (charged), where you can directly touch living things and specimens, and “Deep Sea Talk” (charged), an event where you can listen to deep conversations.
In addition, you can learn about the deep sea from more familiar aspects, such as the resale of “Deep Sea Soup,” which was popular in the past and allows you to taste deep sea creatures.

■Biological exhibit
We are planning to exhibit deep sea creatures such as the Japanese octopus, which is called the idol of the deep sea, as well as giant beetles and spider crabs.
At Sunshine Aquarium, visitors can board a deep-sea trawling boat and have the aquarium staff try their hand at collecting deep-sea creatures. The collected organisms are on display. If you’re lucky during the event, you might even be able to see deep-sea creatures that aren’t scheduled for display. In addition to displaying living organisms, panels will explain in detail their characteristic appearance and ecology.

We will exhibit specimens of deep-sea sharks and specimens of the Japanese sardine sardine, which was registered as a new species in 2021.
In 2022, Sunshine Aquarium will collect the world’s 7th case of a Japanese sea eagle, and exhibit a frozen specimen of a Japanese sea eagle. This year, Yokozunaiwashi will exhibit the world’s first “plastination specimen”*.

■Underwater drone survey results
Since 2019, Sunshine Aquarium has been conducting deep-sea surveys using underwater drones, mainly in Suruga Bay.
The deep sea has many mysteries that have yet to be solved, and we will publish the latest research results conducted in previously unexplored areas.

We hold guided tours where you can listen to more in-depth
explanations about deep sea creatures from breeding staff. You can go into the backyard, which is normally not accessible, and directly touch living organisms and specimens of deep sea creatures.

If you were a deep sea creature, which creature would you be? A deep sea creature diagnosis corner supervised by breeding staff has been set up. You might discover an unexpected side of yourself through the diagnosis!
■Deep sea trash explanation panel
A panel will be set up to explain the marine plastic waste problem, which has become increasingly serious in recent years.
We will show you deep-sea debris photographed by Sunshine Aquarium’s underwater drone and explain its impact on the deep sea.

This is a flavorful dish made from soup stock made from deep-sea shrimp such as Higenaga shrimp and Tsunonagachi Hiro shrimp. The breeding staff personally goes out to collect the fish, so the ingredients and soup stock will change depending on the collecting situation!
