■ [More than 80% of men regret: “There are beauty things I left unfinished this year”] What are the top 5 beauty investments that men in their 20s to 50s choose that they definitely want to make next year? 1. Beard hair removal 2. Exercise/training 3. Skin care 4. Supplements 5. Full body hair removal
[FY2024/Trends and Trends in Men’s Beauty] Gorilla Clinic Director Fumihiko Inami focuses on “hair removal” and “eyebrows” ~ Reasons and background of increasing men’s beauty consciousness (about the rapid growth of the men’s beauty market) Explain ~
……
[Image 1
With men’s increasing awareness of beauty, the number of beauty clinics and salons for men is increasing, and many men are becoming more concerned about their appearance and health.
Values have diversified, and it is no longer unusual for men to get their hair done at a hair salon or use cosmetics on a daily basis as part of their personal grooming routine, or to visit a nail salon. Also, only from the perspective of appearance and cleanliness. [Image 2
“self-care”, such as improvement of daily convenience and QOL, etc. “Beauty” has now completely gained citizenship among men, and is becoming commonplace as a part of their investment.
In response to this background, Gorilla Clinic, a comprehensive beauty clinic specializing in men (Junikai Medical Corporation/Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, General Director: Fumihiko Inami, hereinafter referred to as “our clinic”), will open from November 17th to 18th, 2023. For two days, we conducted a [generational: Male beauty awareness survey (internet survey)] targeting 600 men between the ages of 20 and 59. Survey results/reference materials
[Image 3
In response to the question “Do you have any unfinished investments in beauty (body) in 2023 (this year)?”, over 80% of men answered, “I have unfinished beauty investments.”
[Top 5 new beauty investments for 2024 (next year)]: 1. Beard hair removal 2. Exercise/training 3. Home skin care 4. Supplements 5. Full body hair removal. In particular, 1 out of 4 people (24.0%) answered the number one question, “Beard hair removal.”
Additionally, when asked in an open-ended question, “Which beauty investment have you made this year that you are most satisfied with?”, the most common answer was “skin care at home.” This result shows that the men’s cosmetics (cosmetics for men) market is performing well.
[Image 4
In fact, Gorilla Cosmetics, basic cosmetics for men supervised by our clinic based on the knowledge of men’s skin through medical treatment, will soon be celebrating its 3rd anniversary since its general release on December 15, 2020, with a cumulative total of 365,493 units shipped. Break through the book (as of November 30, 2023). Most of the users are students and businessmen in their 20s and 30s, but they are also popular among Generation Z and men in their 40s and above, who are highly sensitive to beauty. They also find it “easy to use even for skin care beginners” and “the natural calming scent is also nice.” It has received favorable reviews and is supported by men of a wide range of ages.

In addition, in the same release, Dr. Fumihiko Inami (pictured on the left), General Director of Gorilla Clinic, explains “hair removal” and “eyebrows” that are attracting attention as “Trends and Trends in Men’s Beauty” in 2024.
We also provide our thoughts on the reasons and background
(advancement of the men’s beauty market) for the increasing beauty awareness among men.

“Upfront investment” of hair removal
[Image 14
Medical laser hair removal is not just a treatment to “reduce hair.” You are required to avoid sunburn, keep your skin pale, and avoid skin problems such as acne. In other words, proper skin care is essential for laser hair removal, and the result is healthy skin. From a medium- to long-term perspective, it can be considered that they are making a “large upfront investment in their appearance.”
When performing medical laser hair removal, “skin color” not only affects the effectiveness but also is very important in preventing complications. The ideal condition is to have pale skin and dark hair; dark skin not only reduces hair removal effectiveness but also increases the risk of complications such as burns.
For this reason, we recommend the use of sunscreen for those undergoing laser hair removal. Also, if you have a lot of acne, laser irradiation is not possible, so you should take appropriate skin care and prioritize acne treatment in some cases. Skin that can undergo laser hair removal has sufficient cosmetic compliance.
Conversely, a state of low cosmetic compliance refers to dry or oily skin due to lack of skin care, and subsequent problems such as enlarged pores, keratotic plug retention, acne, abscesses, induration, and scarring. Excessive exposure to UV rays can cause photoaging such as age spots, wrinkles, and sagging skin, as well as skin cancer. These treatments are associated with downtime such as pain and redness, may not be completely cured, and in some cases may even lead to death, leading to the risk of significantly lowering QOL. I believe that working on laser hair removal has the aspect of “preventive medicine” that prevents diseases such as those mentioned above. We at medical institutions feel that the fact that major cosmetics manufacturers have all begun to develop cosmetics for middle-aged and older men is a positive trend. Genital hair removal for middle-aged and elderly people has even attracted attention as “nursing care hair removal.” It is a little-known fact that beard hair removal is also a type of nursing care hair removal. Even if you become in need of care and find it difficult to shave yourself, your beard will continue to grow. Even if a caregiver tries to shave, it is not an easy task. I hope that “nursing hair removal,” which involves removing beard hair for oneself and one’s family, will attract more attention in the future.
Commitment to eyebrows
It is said that the shape of eyebrows represents the state of society. In the late 90’s, thin eyebrows were preferred by both men and women, but in recent years thick eyebrows, which were popular before the late 90’s, have become popular. In the past, tweezers were commonly used to shape eyebrows, and problems such as “too much tweezing and the eyebrows no longer grow back” arose. Some people have had their eyebrows permanent makeup done overseas because it is cheaper, but there are also cases where the color and shape of the eyebrows are unnatural.
As men’s beauty has become more widespread, it is a natural
progression that “eyebrow creation”, which until now was thought to be done mainly by women, has also spread to men. The number of “eyebrow salons” that men can attend is expanding, especially in Tokyo. If you want to shape your eyebrows but don’t know what shape you want them to be, it’s a good idea to first go to an eyebrow salon and have a variety of options presented to you, then choose the recommended shape. However, treatments at salons mainly involve shaving and cutting, and the effects last only for about two weeks to a month.
Once you have decided on the shape of your eyebrows that you like, the final touch is to apply permanent makeup to your eyebrows. Especially recommended for those with thin or sparse eyebrows. It is possible to achieve a more natural tone and shape than previous methods, and it is difficult to distinguish it from real eyebrows unless you touch them. However, it is most important to understand that both laser hair removal and permanent makeup are “irreversible treatments,” and to choose a clinic or salon with high technology.

What is most important as a doctor is “heart” and “communication” before knowledge and skills. With this belief in mind, I take it upon myself to face the concerns and hopes of my patients, and to empathize with their feelings. In addition to working hard at medical treatment as an evangelist who spreads the wonders of men’s beauty to the world, he also cooperates extensively in media appearances and interviews. It has a reputation for accurate, easy-to-understand, and unbiased articles.
In my personal life, I am the father of one son and one daughter. His biggest hobby is commuting by bicycle, and he has strong legs that cover 6,000 kilometers a year.
