Dance: From the Higan
The first collaboration between sculptor Kohei Nawa and dancer Min Tanaka, the play “From the Higan” will be performed at the YCC Kenmin Bunka Hall (Yamanashi Kenmin Bunka Hall).

Min Tanaka has been pursuing unconventional experimental activities since the 1970s, exploring the relationship between the body and the world. One of these activities is the “Hakushu Festival” held in the mountain village of Yamanashi Prefecture, where he is based. Kohei Nawa participated as a volunteer staff member in this festival, which can be said to be the pioneer of outdoor art festivals in Japan, and professes that he was strongly influenced by it.
With the advent of advanced information technology, people’s physicality has become diluted, and non-physical expressions have begun to spread. Where is humanity heading? The body is the initial environment unique to all living things, and it is also the point of connection with the world. By confronting the body in their own ways, Min Tanaka and Kohei Nawa have confronted the world of all classes and opened up new creative possibilities. Both of them will now take on the stage in Yamanashi, the place where they met.
Amid universal motifs such as mud and fog that constantly change shape and fill the space, a vulture, said to govern death and rebirth, stands as if it transcends time. Kohei Nawa connects the body and matter. I have been exploring the sensation of rising up within these convections. What emerges is a dynamic time-space where all materials continue to collide and harmonize, although at first glance it appears to be tranquil. A dance is born between these places, Min Tanaka’s body, and the bodies of the viewers, creating a stage that is an ever-changing phenomenon. It is exactly like the waves that come from the other shore to this shore and return. An “event” that will carve such a special memory will be thrown out to the audience.
