A talk session with Hamano Seisakusho Co., Ltd., which operates “Sumida (Garage Sumida)”, was held on Friday, December 1, 2023. Collaboration with Hamano Seisakusho, a pioneer in manufacturing industry and startup support
With the rapid changes in social conditions in recent years, an increasing number of companies are creating new businesses and exploring new technologies and ideas. In addition, while many startups and ventures have started up and the environment for raising funds is improving, collaboration with companies that have manufacturing know-how, manufacturing equipment, and capabilities is not
progressing.
“KOKOKARA” was held with the aim of accelerating open innovation with a wide variety of companies.
At Fair, we have leveraged our manufacturing technology to support a number of startups such as the Ory Institute and WHILL, as well as supporting the development of the electric vehicle HOKUSAI and the deep-sea exploration boat Edokko No. 1, as well as supporting large companies. We collaborated with Hamano Seisakusho Co., Ltd., which has been working on business creation, and held a representative discussion.
The theme is “Latest examples of new technology and new product development in agricultural DX”
Mizuni goal exhibited at JAPAN MOBILITY SHOW 2023
On the day, the theme was “The latest examples of new technology and new product development in agricultural DX – On-site manufacturing made possible by initial impulse”, and Hiyoshi, representative of Hatake Hotke, who develops and manufactures the weeding robot “Mizuni Goal”, and real “Shitamachi” Representative director of Hamano Seisakusho, known as “Rocket”
CEO Keiichi Hamano held a talk session.
Event report
On December 1st, which was held at the same time as the International Robot Exhibition, an evangelist from WingArc 1st Co., Ltd.
Masashi Okawa served as the moderator, and four people took the stage, including Kenji Hoffman, Mizuni Goal’s head of development.
At the beginning of the talk session, after introducing the
initiatives of each company, CEO Hiyoshi talked about the history of the company’s founding and development episodes, such as the excitement of growing rice that he started after moving to Japan, and the difficulty of weeding that he learned firsthand. Did. Also, The experience of Mizuni Goal being sold out and waiting for reservations within a month made me realize how strong the need for smart agriculture is. He touched on the current situation in which Mizuni Goal has been sitting in a warehouse for about 300 days, and explained how Mizuni Goal was provided through a rental system between multiple farmers in the region rather than selling it outright. Furthermore, from the business that started with the pain of “I don’t want to weed,” the vision gradually emerged: “I want to help farmers,” “I want to solve regional issues,” and “I want to improve Japan’s food.” The story also introduces the story that led to the idea of “what kind of earth should we pass on to our children?” When I introduced real stories of how I developed Mizuni Goal, sometimes using and modifying materials purchased at home centers and e-commerce stores, the audience erupted in roars of laughter (some people looked on with anxiety). However, from Mr. Hamano*
“I have mastered the basics of development: “Make something with what I have” and “I don’t want XX.” ”* was the comment.
* In the first half of the talk, the theme was “Issues resolution, sense of ownership” *
In response to Mr. Okawa’s comment that there are cases where founders are visionaries but have little sense of ownership, and conversely, founders with a strong sense of ownership are unable to empathize with them, Mr. Following Mr. Hamano, who said, “We cannot go this far with a sense of ownership. We are the ones who are involved in rice production.” There were many troubles during the development of Mizuni Goal, but even if we were able to develop it, Even if I can’t, weeding will come again next year. There’s a reason why I can’t give up.”
Also, the second half theme* “Is it the initial impulse or the execution of the plan, the problem or the vision?”*
In the part, Mr. Hamano pointed out that there are not many people who can carry out the plan and that it is easy to understand the simple and superficial words used to raise funds. Afterwards, Hiyoshi said, “Honestly, I don’t care about smart agriculture or agricultural technology (lol).
But I don’t want to weed. ”, he mentioned the problems that have remained unchanged since the company’s founding, and as a result of sitting down with the members to discuss what they really wanted to do, he said, “When I imagined handing over the earth to our children 50 or 100 years from now, I realized that I “Even though we were not directly involved, we felt a very strong sense of ownership,” he said, looking back on the past.
We also talked about new products under development, and Mr. Kenji, who has a track record of inventions and patents in various fields such as cars, motorcycles, musical instruments, and toys, said, “Agriculture and rice cultivation have been going on for hundreds of years. I’m still confused as to why there wasn’t a similar solution. An invention is not an unrealized dream, but something that has yet to be realized.I believe in it 100% and will continue to create it. ” was the comment.
At the end of the talk session, the members repeated Hatake Hotke’s unusual business and frank statements, saying, “The key is how much data can be collected by running the PDCA cycle in a short period of a few weeks in the summer.” Mr. Okawa and Mr. Hamano said, “ One commenter said, “I don’t see or hear much about this in the normal manufacturing industry,” and “Overall, they’re the strangest people.” To which Hiyoshi replied, “We are in the agricultural industry, not in the manufacturing industry.” “I was wrong, I’m sorry. (lol)” The show ended in a peaceful and lively atmosphere from beginning to end. About “Mizuni Goal”
“Mizuni Goal” is an automatic weeding robot born in Nagano Prefecture, which has the largest number of small-scale farmers in the country and has agricultural issues such as a lack of successors and abandoned farmland. By running around rice fields and making the water muddy, it automates the weeding process by blocking the photosynthesis of weeds that rob the rice of nutrients.

~The first harvested rice since our founding is now on sale on EC~ Conventional farmers in Japan are forced to use pesticides and fertilizers such as herbicides to reduce heavy labor and management burdens. The rice that will be released this time is pesticide-free rice that was made possible using the weeding robot “Mizuni Goal” from Hatake Hotke, which is involved in smart agriculture that is accessible to small-scale farmers, who make up the majority of farmers. Cultivated in the rich natural environment of Nagano Prefecture, by experienced farmers and using the latest technology, this is a new type of domestic circular agriculture in Japan that takes into account not only the impact on the natural environment but also the interests of both consumers and producers. This is rice that has potential and can be a prototype.
