Bungeishunju Co., Ltd. (Head office: Kioicho, Chiyoda-ku, President: Nariyuki Iikubo) will release Kasumi Asakura’s new book “Yomu Yomu Kataru” on September 19th.
■Story summary
The story is set in “Otaru”.
After the coronavirus pandemic has ended, six members of the “Reading Books on the Slope” group, mostly in their 80s and 90s, will gather at “Café Citron”. As they read the assigned books aloud and discuss their meanings and interpretations, various episodes come back to them, including memories with their deceased son and his elementary school students.
The main character, Yasuda, who failed in his dream of becoming a novelist and became the hired manager of “Citron”, is moved little by little every time he attends a book club.
Then, on the day of the 20th anniversary public reading session, a major change occurred.
This is a heartwarming story that will make readers want to visit Otaru and interact with the people of Otaru once they finish reading the last page.

* Kasumi Asakura (Asakura Kasumi) *
Born in Otaru, Hokkaido in 1960. He made his debut as a writer in 2003 when he won the 37th Hokkaido Shimbun Literary Award for “Robin-san no Koto” and in 2004 won the 72nd Contemporary Novel Newcomer Award for “Liver Burns.” In 2009, he won the 30th Eiji Yoshikawa Literary Award for New Writers for Tamura Hamadaka. In 2019, he won the 32nd Shugoro Yamamoto Award for “Hiraba no Tsuki”. His other books include “Who else is there”, “Terasafu”, “High tide”, and “Lively sunset”.
