We will be cooperating with the “100 Years of Phototypesetting” exhibition to be held at the Printing Museum run by Hideharu (hereinafter referred to as TOPPAN Holdings). This special exhibition will be held from Saturday, September 21, 2024 to Monday, January 13, 2025 (holiday), and will feature a model of a Japanese
phototypesetting machine owned by Morisawa, as well as a reproduction of the phototypesetting machine “MC- 6 type (2024)” will also be exhibited at the venue. Additionally, on Saturday, November 16th and Saturday, November 30th, we will hold a demonstration of the MC-6 (2024) and an event where you can experience its operation. * Phototypesetting is a technology that applies the principles of photography to print and typeset text. Nobuo Morisawa, the founder of Morisawa, applied for a patent for a “Japanese phototypesetting machine” on July 24, 1924, and later worked with Mokichi Ishii, the founder of Shaken Co., Ltd., to create the world’s first Japanese phototypesetting machine. was successfully put into practical use. The advent of phototypesetting was an epoch-making event that eliminated the complexity of letterpress printing, which had been the mainstream type of text printing up until then. Its convenience greatly improved the working environment for people involved in the printing industry, and it also made it easier to develop typefaces, which led to the creation of many beautiful typefaces.
This special exhibition commemorates 100 years since the invention of phototypesetting, and introduces the history, role, mechanism, and typeface design of phototypesetting, which bridged the transition from letterpress printing to digital fonts.

About “MC-6 type (2024)”
The “MC-6 model” phototypesetting machine, of which only a few units currently exist, has been reproduced as the “MC-6 model (2024)” by making use of the original shape and digitizing some of its functions. The MC-6 model is a versatile manual phototypesetting machine released in 1967, and is a long-selling machine with sales of 10,000 units at the time. The “MC-6 type (2024)” reproduced in Reiwa allows you to experience typesetting while understanding the mechanism, and is normally exhibited at Morisawa’s exhibition zone (showroom Osaka) and Tokyo headquarters.
