* About Tokyo YMCA Medical and Welfare College Occupational Therapy Department * In the Department of Occupational Therapy, students aim to pass the national occupational therapist examination through three years of study.
The on-campus pass rate for the 59th National Examination for Occupational Therapists held in 2020 was 92.0%, which was
approximately 7.9 points higher than the national pass rate of 84.1%. Our department utilizes ICT tools to efficiently acquire the knowledge necessary to become an occupational therapist. Therefore, we are enriching practical classes and increasing the time for individual guidance so that the knowledge acquired after graduation can be put to practical use in the field.

* Features of the Department of Occupational Therapy *
* 1. National exam preparation using ICT tools *
In order to pass the national occupational therapist examination, you are required to understand and acquire specialized knowledge from the basics of a wide range of academic fields, including anatomy, physiology, neurology, and psychology. At our school, we use reference books and a “Question Bank” to supplement understanding of class content, as well as “Taku Drill,” an app for practicing past exam questions.
Additionally, in order to ensure that the knowledge learned in classes and exercises is firmly established, “Monoxer” will be introduced from 2023. By acquiring specialized terminology and basic knowledge, students deepen their understanding of what they have learned in classes and practical training, which leads to basic learning for problems that require practical knowledge, such as specialized problems and practical problems.
This tool automatically adjusts the difficulty and frequency of questions asked according to each student’s level of knowledge retention. Furthermore, since learning status is visualized as “memory level”, instructors can provide optimal support to each student depending on their learning status.
By setting aside 20 minutes every morning to consolidate basic knowledge using Monoxer, learning using smartphones has become a habit. For this reason, many students use their spare time, such as while commuting to school, during breaks, or during breaks during practical training, to prepare for national exams.
The app system “Monoxer” was introduced in 2023 with the aim of improving long-term memory retention. Students use their smartphones to complete assignments distributed by instructors.
* 2. Enhancement of practical support system *
At our school, all students undergo clinical training at hospitals and facilities for second-year students twice for three weeks and for third-year students twice for eight weeks. Previously, students had to submit their training content in paper reports on a specific day, making it difficult to provide immediate support for troubles and knowledge follow-up at training institutions. Therefore, our school has been using the “Clinical Training Support System” since 2021 to enable communication between students and training institutions at any time.
During practical training, one student is usually dispatched to each training institution, so many students feel anxious, but instructors can check student attendance, training content, and evaluations at the training institution in real time. Therefore, learning guidance and follow-up can be provided at the appropriate time. This system improves student learning effectiveness and provides efficient support.
In addition, before the clinical training for second-year students, we invite people with disabilities who live in the community as instructors and conduct “hands-on-person training” in which they work in small groups on everything from gathering information to
evaluation, goal setting, and treatment. This is a good opportunity to put knowledge into practice in preparation for practical training, and has the effect of alleviating anxiety about practical training.

Classes are conducted with the cooperation of people living near the school (actually people with disabilities).

*Environment surrounding occupational therapy*
Occupational therapy is a mental and physical rehabilitation that helps people who have found it difficult to live a normal life due to illness or injury to regain a normal life. Occupational therapy is available to all people, regardless of age, who require assistance in their daily lives. We create bonds between people and society through work at all stages of life.
In Japan, which has become a super-aging society, the population aged 65 and over will account for approximately 29% of the total population in 2023, and is estimated to rise to approximately 35% in 2040. The role of occupational therapists will become increasingly important in supporting the decline in physical and cognitive functions during old age, improving quality of life (QOL), and supporting independent living.
As AI and robot technology continues to advance, occupational therapists are ranked 6th in the ranking of jobs that cannot be replaced by AI or robots. While utilizing these new technologies, occupational therapists have an important role to play, such as the ability to empathize and make ethical judgments unique to humans, and it is believed that the value of occupational therapy will continue to increase in the future.

* About “Tokyo YMCA Medical and Welfare College” *
Our school is a qualification training school designated by the Minister of Health, Labor and Welfare to train occupational therapists and certified care workers, with a college spirit based on the Bible’s command to “love one another” and a Christian philosophy.
In addition to passing the national qualification exam, we aim to develop professionals who can play an active role in the medical and nursing care fields. We hold a variety of academic events, volunteer activities, and organize curriculums in hopes of all-round growth in spirit, mind, and body.
The parent organization, Tokyo YMCA, is a youth development
organization established in 1880 with a worldwide network, and our school was established in 1996.
At the open campus held on September 21st, there will be interaction not only with our school’s faculty and staff but also with current students. We would like to hear from current students, such as, “Why did you decide to study occupational therapy, why did you choose YMCA, and what do you think after actually enrolling?” We look forward to your reservation and participation.
