Vol.35” (Weekly Asahi MOOK) will be released. This time’s special feature is “1500 years of history of Japanese Buddhism.” It provides easy-to-understand explanations of Prince Shotoku’s efforts after the introduction of Buddhism, the teachings and origins of the 13 sects, the achievements of Kukai, a revolutionary in the Buddhist world, the birth of Kamakura New Buddhism, etc. “The World of Ryotaro Shiba’s “Kaido wo Yuku”” is also currently being serialized.
Buddhism is said to have been introduced to Japan in 552 (some say it was introduced in 538). The Soga clan and Prince Shotoku, who were active in introducing Buddhism, won the battle against the
anti-Buddhist factions and promoted the creation of an orderly nation based on Buddhism. In ancient times, Buddhism was supported mainly by the ruling class such as the emperor and aristocrats, but in the Kamakura period, a new form of Buddhism began to spread among the common people. Since then, it has survived modern crises such as the separation of Shinto and Buddhism and the anti-Buddhist movement, and has continued into the present day.
