◆Overview
Professor Yang Jiajia of the Department of Cognitive Neuroscience, Faculty of Health System Integration Science, National University Corporation Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita-ku, Okayama City, President: Yasutomo Nasu), was appointed by the Japan Agency for Medical Research and Development (AMED). ) was selected for Area 2 (Elucidation of the dynamics of human higher brain functions) of the “Integrated Neuroscience Program (Individual Priority Research Projects)” in 2020.
This project will develop the results of innovative technology and research infrastructure to date, advance the elucidation of brain mechanisms, etc. by strengthening collaboration between basic and clinical sciences, and academia and industry. We will improve the brain) and promote research and development of seeds for innovative diagnosis, treatment, and drug discovery for neurological diseases such as dementia.
Professor Yang submitted an application under the open recruitment category of Area 2 (Elucidation of the dynamics of human higher brain functions) under the title of research and development project, “Development of a super-hierarchical method for measuring brain function dynamics by combining neurophysiology and layered fMRI technology.”・I was selected to lead the research team as the research and development representative (team leader) for three years from 2020 to 2020.
In response to this selection, Professor Yang said, “Our brain is a complex biological information processing system with a huge number of neurons in a multi-level hierarchical structure, and it is capable of performing various brain functions such as perception, cognition, and judgment.” It is known that disruption of neural circuits in each layer causes neurological diseases such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) and Parkinson’s disease (PD), which interfere with daily life. Currently, in order to understand higher brain functions in humans and elucidate the pathology of neurological diseases, there is a need to develop super-hierarchical measurement methods that can broadly and precisely examine brain function dynamics, from cortical layers to the whole brain. We applied the 7 Tesla ultra-high magnetic field layer fMRI (functional magnetic resonance imaging) technology developed in previous research to the small primate marmoset, and combined it with neurophysiology to develop a super-hierarchical system. We aim to develop a method for measuring brain function dynamics.” He showed enthusiasm for the three years of research activities.
Okayama University has established “top priority research fields” in its research fields, one of which is the health care field. In addition, our university has been selected by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology’s “Regional Core and Distinctive Research Universities Strengthening Promotion Project (J-PEAKS)” (implementing body: Japan Society for the Promotion of Science) to bring about social change and improve well-being, including healthcare. We are strategically working to improve this. Professor Yang has also been selected for the Emergent Research Support Project by the Japan Science and Technology Agency (JST), representing outstanding young researchers who are energetically leading the university’s top research fields. I’m alone. Please look forward to the continued efforts of Professor Yang and the regional core and distinctive research university: Okayama University.
