International Safe Abortion Day Commemoration “~Safe Abortion is Our Right – What’s happening now, one year after the introduction of oral abortion pills” Webinar held
International cooperation NGO JOICFP (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo) and the Reproductive Rights Information Dissemination Team (Repla) will hold a webinar on September 25th (Wednesday) to commemorate the International Safe Abortion Day on September 28th. One year has passed since its introduction, and we will be holding an event titled “What’s happening now?”
* What is International Safe Abortion Day? *
International Safe Abortion Day was established in 1990 as a movement to decriminalize abortion in Latin America and the Caribbean. Abortion
Day) was born. NGOs and international organizations from all over the world who sympathize with this idea have connected in the form of a federation, saying, “Let’s talk about abortion so that safe and accessible abortion is recognized as a good thing in society.” Let’s make abortion a normal thing,” people are calling for various actions and campaigns to be launched around September 28th around the world. * Safe abortion: Japan’s past, present, and future *
In April 2023, oral abortion pills were approved in Japan. This came more than 30 years after it was first approved in France in 1988. Before the approval of oral abortion pills, surgery was the only option for induced abortion in Japan. Among these, one of Japan’s characteristics is that it uses surgical techniques that have been labeled as “outdated” by the World Health Organization (WHO). The crime of abortion still remains in Japan, and induced abortion is only legally legal under certain conditions under the Maternal Protection Act. There are various other issues, such as the need for spouse’s consent and the high cost.
Approximately one year has passed since the approval of oral abortion pills, and what is the current situation in Japan and the world? Safe Why not learn about the situation surrounding abortion (safe abortion/miscarriage) in Japan in comparison with the rest of the world, and think together about what is needed to realize a society where people can make their own choices? .
This event will be co-sponsored by RIPL and JOICFP, which are working on the theme of “Safe Abortion” from their respective perspectives.
