Overcoming the Noto Peninsula Earthquake and restarting! We will be holding the “Ikuhana Lighthouse Market” where you can spend a special time at the Machinaka Lighthouse.
Saturday, September 21, 2024 from 10:00 to 21:00 – Venue: Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture –
……
The Ikuhama Lighthouse Utilization Project Executive Committee will hold the “Ikuhana Lighthouse Market” on Saturday, September 21, 2024. This is an event that anyone of all ages can enjoy, with the hope that it will continue to be an opportunity for people to gather under the Ikuhana Lighthouse, which was the symbol of the once-bustling fishing village of Iku. You can also enjoy the view of Toyama Bay and the Tateyama Mountain Range from the lighthouse, which you cannot usually see.
As part of the Nippon Foundation’s “Ocean and Japan Project,” this event will dig up local ocean memories centered on lighthouses, connect regions to regions, different fields to different industries, Japan and the world, and create new ocean experiences. This project will be carried out with the support of the “Sea and Lighthouse Project”.

◼︎What is Lighthouse Market? Aiming to hold regular events
The Ikuhana Lighthouse, which stands in the Ikuhama district of Kurobe City, Toyama Prefecture, is a machinaka lighthouse that is rare in Japan. The town of Iku, where this lighthouse is located, was a port of call for the Kitamaebune during the Edo period, and was a base for the North Sea fishing industry from the early Meiji period to the Showa period, and was a lively place filled with people’s mixed feelings. It was.
Last year in 2023, we brought this bustle to Reiwa! With this in mind, we have held a complex event called “Lighthouse Night Market” that takes advantage of the “location” and the “nighttime” when the lights of the lighthouse shine.
This year, the event will be held in the morning so that more people can enjoy the various shapes of Ikuhana Lighthouse and the scenery from there. The lighthouse will be open to the public from 10 a.m. and a marche will be held. At night, the lighthouse will be lit up, and the event will be restarted with the aim of becoming a regular event as the “Ikuhana Lighthouse Market” from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m.

◼︎Overcoming the Noto Peninsula earthquake and holding the event Due to the Noto Peninsula Earthquake on January 1st, a small amount of mercury inside the lighthouse spilled out, resulting in high mercury concentrations in the lighthouse’s air, making it impossible to hold the lighthouse opening event that had been scheduled for the spring. However, after renovation work over the summer, the numbers returned to normal, and we are now able to hold open events.
The sunset from Iku Beach has been selected as one of Japan’s top 100 sunsets, and the view of the sunset, Toyama Bay, and the Tateyama Mountain Range from the lighthouse balcony is outstanding. Now that it is now open to the public, we decided to open the lighthouse not only from daytime to evening, but also at night for the first time, allowing you to enjoy the mysterious scenery from the lighthouse.

The night market in 2023 last year. It was crowded with customers looking for local flavors such as vertical grilling.
At the base of the Ikuhana Lighthouse, which is painted black and white, in a venue designed with tents and other objects as a motif of the “black and white” of the Ikuhana Lighthouse, you can enjoy the traditional fish cooking method of the local Ikuhana fishing village, “tate-yaki.” First, there will be a Lighthouse Marche featuring local shops, food, and miscellaneous goods, attractions for children, and live music on stage, allowing you to spend a special time away from everyday reality.
