Doctors Without Borders Japan Starts Call for Donations for Response to the New Coronavirus Infectious Disease Crisis
With the worldwide outbreak of the new coronavirus infection (COVID-19), the Doctors Without Borders (MSF) is accelerating emergency medical assistance activities, particularly in Europe and developing countries. MSF Japan is seeking a donation of limited use for medical aid for the infectious disease and other aid activities following the spread of infectious disease, aiming to raise a portion of the funding from Japan in March. Started on 26th. MSF’s overall budget is about 12 billion yen (100 million euros), with a goal of raising 700 million yen (5.38 million euros) from Japan. Donations are accepted online, by transfer to Japan Post Bank, and by phone (credit card payment).

Assistance in Europe, where infections are expanding, and countries with vulnerable healthcare systems
MSF has been responding to the spread of the new coronavirus infection by providing medical protective equipment to hospitals in Wuhan, China, beginning with infection prevention awareness-raising activities launched in Hong Kong at the end of January this year. Currently, Italy has helped hospitals in northern Italy, where the number of fatalities exceeds that of China, especially in epidemic North America. France and Belgium also cooperate in testing and caring for the most vulnerable, including homeless people, immigrants and unaccompanied minors. Spain is also working with health authorities to increase the capacity of medical institutions to accept patients. They are also preparing for emergencies in preparation for the spread of infection at Moria refugee camps on Lesbos, Greece, where many refugees live in overcrowded conditions.
At the same time, MSF is reviewing its activities in countries and regions that have long been developing medical aid programs, such as Africa, the Middle East, Southeast Asia, Oceania, and Latin America, and focusing on the prevention of new coronavirus infections. We are preparing for it. Where infections are likely to occur in the future, it is necessary to introduce infection prevention measures, screen patients and establish a triage system, secure and maintain isolated compartments, and ensure thorough health education. In cooperation with the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Ministry of Health of each country, we are examining what kind of assistance can be provided if the number of infected people increases.
“With the spread of the new coronavirus in the world, many people are at risk of health, and healthcare professionals must be safe and secure in any medical institution,” said Takashi Kurume, chairman of Japan, MSF. Lack of supply of necessary medical supplies, infection of healthcare workers, and hospital outages should be avoided, and the international community is at the highest risk of infection. We must not forget the care of vulnerable people, and we urge you to help the world solidify and overcome this crisis. ”
