As a craft beer brewery located in a world natural heritage site, Amami Beer takes measures to be considerate of the natural
environment, such as using electric brewing equipment instead of using gas or oil as a heat source during brewing. .
In addition, as part of our sustainable efforts, we have provided beer lees from our brewery to the Orange Free-Range Chicken Farm operated by Amami Prawn, which also raises chicken in an environmentally friendly manner.
What is beer lees?
Brewing beer uses a large amount of malt as a raw material.
The residue from which sugar is extracted from malt is called “beer lees,” and after extraction, it is not used at the brewery and is discarded.
What is free range?
Most of the chicken eggs we eat are made from chickens raised in small cages. The chickens are kept in small cages lined up all over the farm in a windowless poultry farm without being able to move around. Efforts to reduce costs by taking up less space and increasing work efficiency have allowed eggs to remain at the same price for decades. Chickens kept in cages where they cannot move around are susceptible to diseases, and are often given antibiotics and antibacterial agents to prevent them.

On the other hand, free-range raising is a method in which birds are kept free-range on flat ground, rather than in cages. Because they can move around freely, they gain strength and grow into healthy bodies that are less susceptible to illness. Throughout the day, chickens dig and peck at the ground looking for insects, and rub their bodies against the ground in which they dig to take a dust bath. Bathing in sand removes dirt and parasites from its feathers and keeps its body clean.

We are planning to start laying eggs from April.

At the Orange free-range chicken farm, we have a playground attached to the chicken house so that the chickens can freely go out to the playground from the chicken house. On days when the weather is nice, the chickens go outside and bask in the sunlight, and enjoy the sea breeze blowing from the Pacific Ocean.

In addition, the Orange free-range chicken farm is actively working to reuse materials that would traditionally have been disposed of as waste. The farm uses beer lees from the Amami Brewery to blend and ferment the beer in-house with corn, soybeans, shellfish, seaweed, etc. , we feed the chickens warm, fermented food.
The water that the chickens drink is sourced from mineral-rich groundwater that comes from the mountains of Amami and is pumped up from 60 meters underground.
Of course, we also raise male chickens. Although it costs more, Mr. Takehara’s desire to help the chickens live a healthy life is reflected in this product.

Future prospects for Representative Takehara
“Currently, we raise 635 chickens, but it is difficult to obtain free-range eggs on the island, and many people do not even know about free-range eggs.We are spreading the benefits of free-range eggs on the island and trying to reach as many people as possible. We would like to expand the scale of breeding so that we can provide them. In the future, they would like to be able to offer dishes made from chickens that have been discarded. ”
