The young people who will lead the future are discussing the incandescence with religion scholar Susumu Shimazaki about the “Let’s make life”-Philosophy lecture on life science dilemma ”
Y-SAPIX and Yoyogi Seminar co-sponsored “5th National Paper Contest” Award Ceremony / Author Special Lecture Report
A national paper contest organized by Y-SAPIX and Yoyogi Seminar of a major school for junior high and high school students. This year’s designated book was selected by Susumu Shimazaki, “Can I Make Life”? A Philosophy Lecture on Life Science Dilemmas. Among the more than 500 entries from across the country, 3 received the Excellence Award and 3 received the honorable work.
The award ceremony was held at SAPIX Yoyogi Hall on November 3 (Sunday), along with a special lecture by the author, Mr. Susumu Shimazaki, and an open discussion with Mr. Shimazaki and the winners. We will deliver the situation.
Y-SAPIX / Yoyogi Seminar’s “National Dissertation Contest” has a unique vision of not only short-term goals such as high school and university entrance exams, but also to improve reading comprehension and expressiveness that will be useful in later life learning. Is a feature. This time, the designated book is Susumu Shimazaki “Is it OK to“ make life ”? A philosophy lecture on life science dilemmas”. This book is an opportunity to think about bioethics issues brought about by the progress of biotechnology along with the benefits.
Prior to the award ceremony, a pamphlet containing the award-winning paper was distributed. “Problem of“ human remodeling society ”to be considered from the viewpoint of diversity and self-identity” “Society or gene should be modified for the problem of illness and disability” Each article has its own unique and sharp theme, and a fresh sensibility in the development of discussions and the uniqueness of expression.
Religious scholar, Susumu Shimazaki
After the award certificate and product were presented to the winners, a special lecture was given by the author, Susumu Shimazaki. First, focusing on “genome editing”, which is currently attracting much attention, we will review the development status of biotechnology after the publication of this book, and discuss the ethical issues associated with the artificial creation of human life. Ask questions. Next, we carefully read and organized the points of each of the six winners from the viewpoint of Mr. Shimazaki. And, “How far is it to make a clone of a child after the child has died” and “to create another child instead?” “The recognition of diversity” We asked each of the winners a question that would provide a hint to deepen the discussion, such as “Is there a possibility that the claim of equality that does not give superiority or inferiority is inconsistent?” The lecture was closed. From the critique of the paper, a new opportunity for discussion
It was a truly amazing development.
After that, 6 award winners surrounded Mr. Shimazaki and went to a public debate. “What makes life’s irreplaceability depend on” “Excessive desires and hopes that are not, can we draw a line” “It is better for parents to strive for“ better grow up ”for their children How is it different from modifying genes so that they are born with qualities? “” Society that is valued by being strong and independent, and that everyone is required to live independently. In response to Mr. Shimazaki’s questions, such as “What problems will occur with the way of life?”, The winners will occasionally discuss their thoughts and ask new questions to Mr. Shimazaki. We will continue to discuss them actively. In the second half, discussions were held on a wider range of themes such as religion and cultural differences, and the stage was like an “incandescent classroom”.
As mentioned above, technology advancement does not stop. Three and a half years have passed since publication, and the science and technology featured in this book is no longer the latest. However, with this book, readers of the younger generation can write a paper with a thorough thought on the theme of “Biotechnology and Bioethics,” and also engage in enthusiastic discussions with authors and other people from different generations. I can do it. It may be a proof that the nature of the problem discussed in this book is not obsolete and will become increasingly important as science progresses.
Even now, 5 years later and 10 years later. I hope that this book will be read by a wide range of generations and encouraged discussions in order to consider the issues of “ethics of life” that accompany “the latest science and technology” at that time.
