JOICFP and six other organizations submitted citizen reports on SRHR for the first Japanese government review in eight years by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). [Events held in Japan in preparation for the event at the United Nations Headquarters in Geneva]
In response to the Japanese government being examined by the United Nations Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women for the first time in eight years, international cooperation NGO JOICFP submitted a civil society report summarizing SRHR issues in Japan in collaboration with six other organizations. We will hold events to raise awareness and disseminate information within Japan. The 89th session of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW) will be held in Geneva in October 2024. Discrimination Against Women) will examine the Japanese government for the first time in eight years.
JOICFP has teamed up with six organizations to publish a civil society report on SRHR issues in Japan (hereinafter referred to as the “SRHR Civil Society Report”).
We compiled and submitted the following.

In addition to “government reports” submitted by each country’s governments, the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women can also submit reports called “civil society reports (shadow reports)” from civil society organizations such as NGOs and individuals. can.

While Japanese government reports describe the government’s efforts to resolve discrimination against women, civil society reports describe the current state of gender inequality in Japanese society and the actual state of discrimination against women from the perspective of citizens. I will report. The United Nations welcomes civil society reports as a valuable source of information and as reference material for its reviews.
This SRHR Civil Society Report focuses on sexual and reproductive health and rights (SRHR), including, inter alia, LBT (Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender) women, non-binary and gender diverse people. , focuses on the continuing and ongoing issue of women’s right to bodily self-determination in Japan.

The SRHR Civil Society Report raises six issues:
● Relief for victims of forced sterilization based on the Eugenic Protection Law ●Introducing comprehensive sex education into public education ●Abolition of the crime of abortion and revision of the Maternal Protection Act ● Access to contraceptive methods, including safe abortion and emergency contraception
●Enactment of anti-discrimination laws based on sexual orientation and gender identity, issues surrounding SRHR for transgender people, discrimination faced by sexual minorities
●Marriage inequality (legislation of same-sex marriage)

*Despite the movement toward achieving gender equality that is progressing at a rapid pace worldwide, Japan routinely ranks low in the World Economic Forum’s gender gap rankings. The recommendations made in the government review by the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women show how Japan lags behind international standards in achieving gender equality. This can be said to be an issue that must be addressed urgently.
