community-based theater festival since 1989, and this year marks the 36th time. Groups that perform in Toshima City during the month of September participate, and the grand prize and other awards are determined by the scores of judges selected from the public. As part of Toshima City’s “International Art and Culture City Initiative,” we aim to create a “theater city in which the entire city is a stage where anyone can play a leading role,” and to broaden the scope of theater and theater culture. This is a unique and deeply rooted theater festival.

The following year, in 2000, a public competition was held for a nickname, and from 139 works, the name “Mime (Maimu)” was chosen because the stage is what gives us dreams.
