On July 20, 2023, Okayama University (Headquarters: Kita Ward, Okayama City; President: Yasutomo Nasu) and the Okayama Prefectural Federation of Societies of Commerce and Industry held a joint workshop on the visualization of corporate CO2 emissions on the Tsushima Campus of the university. It was held at the Iku Co-Creation Commons (OUX). In order to achieve carbon neutrality, it is necessary to reduce greenhouse gas emissions not only for individual companies but also for the entire supply chain. Visualization is required.
This workshop was held as part of research activities by Associate Professor Tatsumasa Tennojitani’s laboratory in the Faculty of Social and Cultural Sciences, which specializes in management accounting and cost accounting. With the cooperation of wood products manufacturer Horiguchi Co., Ltd., a member of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, students from the same laboratory will participate in a “Carbon Footprint,” which shows the total CO2 emissions from procurement of raw materials to disposal and recycling of the company’s products several times until the end of the fiscal year. (CFP)” calculation. This was the first time, and the company’s employees and members of the Chamber of Commerce and Industry also participated, and based on the guidelines announced by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry and the Ministry of the Environment, we examined the amount of emissions at each stage such as “production”, “distribution”, and “use”. There was a lively discussion on how to apply the standards to the company’s products, which are used in various ways.
Shingo Horiguchi, president of the company who participated, said, “It’s a great honor to be able to take on a project like this with students. We want to further raise environmental awareness and improve the added value of our products.”
In the future, students from the same laboratory will tour the company’s factory, collect the necessary data after confirming the manufacturing site, and aim to calculate the carbon footprint within the year.
In addition, this workshop is based on an agreement on collaboration and cooperation between Okayama University and the Okayama Prefectural Federation of Commerce and Industry. It will be the first time. Okayama University is promoting the solution of problems for everyone in the industrial and economic worlds by utilizing the knowledge and skills of the university.
