The Ministry of Health, Labor and Welfare released a special website on “Doctor Work Style Reform” on Friday, December 1, 2023. This site includes content such as information dissemination about the new system of work style reform for doctors that will be implemented from April 2024, videos explaining matters in which we would like patients and their families to cooperate, and medical institutions. We publish public relations materials such as posters and leaflets that can be distributed at various locations.

■“Doctor work style reform” navigator
Asuka Takashima, an actor and model, will serve as a navigator for reforming the way doctors work. In addition to serving as the main visual for promotional materials such as the special site and posters, Mr. Kishima also appears in video content scheduled to be released on the site.
■What is “Doctor work style reform”?
Japan’s medical care has been supported by the long working hours of doctors working at medical institutions. “Reforming the way doctors work” means “reforming” this current situation and creating an environment where doctors can continue to work in good health, thereby ensuring the quality and safety of medical care provided to patients, and at the same time ensuring the quality and safety of medical care provided to patients. This is an effort to maintain a sustainable medical care delivery system throughout the world. Among these, a system that will set an upper limit on overtime hours for doctors will start in April 2024.
■We would like patients and their families to understand and cooperate with us. The way patients receive medical care has a major impact on the way doctors work. In order to advance work style reform for doctors, it is important that all parties involved, including not only medical institutions and medical professionals, but also patients, work together as one.
◇We ask for your cooperation in visiting the clinic during clinic hours. As part of efforts to reform the way doctors work, medical
institutions have begun initiatives such as explaining medical conditions to patients and their families during clinic hours and shortening reception hours for outpatient treatment. Please cooperate by visiting the clinic during the scheduled clinic hours. In particular, we ask for your continued cooperation when receiving explanations about medical conditions, tests, and surgeries. ◇Please understand that we will be dealing with medical staff other than the “usual teachers”.
-Task Shift/Share-
Efforts have also begun to delegate (shift) or divide (share) tasks that doctors were responsible for to other medical staff. For example, various medical staff other than doctors may be responsible for explaining the disease to patients, conducting tests, providing medication guidance in the ward, providing treatment based on the doctor’s instructions, and post-surgery management.
-Multiple attending physician system-
Initiatives have also begun in which doctors who treat patients form teams and multiple attending physicians treat a single patient. In this case, for example, multiple attending physicians may share the responsibility for treating patients depending on the time of day. ◇About the use of public relations materials
