VIE Co., Ltd., which develops next-generation wearable
electroencephalograms and implements neurotechnology in society, published a research paper at PLOS ONE that elucidates brain activity and mood changes during the “tono” state in saunas. In addition, in the experiment, we used an earphone-type electroencephalogram developed at VIE and succeeded in classifying the “totonou” brain state with an average accuracy of 88.34%.

Research background
Saunas are popular around the world as a way to promote relaxation and health. In particular, regular sauna use may be able to prevent neurodegenerative diseases and respiratory diseases, and there are numerous reports on the physical effects of saunas, such as reducing the incidence of depression and colds.
However, very few studies have been reported that demonstrate the effects of sauna bathing from the perspective of brain science or psychology, and the true nature of the “tono” state that accompanies sauna bathing has not been elucidated.
Therefore, by measuring brain activity before and after sauna bathing and administering mood evaluation scales (questionnaires), we clarified brain activity and mood changes in the “tono” state, and from the perspective of brain science and psychology. We conducted an experiment to verify the effectiveness of saunas. They also performed an auditory oddball task (measuring attention and reaction time to target stimuli) before and after the sauna, focusing on changes in P300 and MMN amplitude. Furthermore, we verified the accuracy of classifying the brain’s “active” and “non-active” states using an earphone-type electroencephalogram.
