Part 2: Trends in flame retardant regulations overseas
[Purpose of the lecture]
Regarding flame retardant regulations overseas, there are the Stockholm Convention (also known as the POPs Convention), which is regulated simultaneously worldwide, and regulations specific to each region and country, such as the EU, the United States, and Canada. For Japanese companies, the biggest impact is the POPs Convention, which prohibits production, use, import and export in Japan, but flame retardant regulations in Europe and the United States also affect exports to the same region, and the results of regulatory studies in those regions. It is often the basis for selecting POPs substances, so it requires constant attention.
In this course, we will discuss the current status of flame retardant regulations, as well as the ideas of sustainable chemicals strategy (CSS) and circular economy (CE), which originated from the Green Deal policy announced in 2019 in the EU, and how the world will change in the future. I would also like to explain how this will affect flame retardant regulations.
【program】
1. Flame retardants regulated by international treaties
2. EU chemical substance regulation trends and their impact on flame retardants 1) What is the Green Deal policy?
2) What is Sustainable Chemicals Strategy (CSS)?
3) Impact of CSS on flame retardant regulations
4) Flame retardant regulation proposal based on CSS→REACH restriction roadmap 5) Flame retardant regulation strategy using REACH restricted substances 6) Flame retardant regulations and future developments based on CE→Ecodesign regulations
3. Current EU flame retardant regulations
4. Current flame retardant regulations in North America
5. Current flame retardant regulations in Asia (Japan, China, Korea) Question-and-answer session

Part 3 Features and prescription examples of non-halogen flame retardants [Purpose of the lecture]
In this course, we will explain the combustion mechanisms that are important in making polymeric materials flame retardant and the flame retardant mechanisms of each type of flame retardant, and then introduce examples of prescriptions using non-halogen flame
retardants. In the prescription examples, we will mainly discuss flame retardant formulations for each end use using intumescent flame retardants and NO-alkyl flame retardants, mainly for polyolefins. At the same time, we will also introduce recent development trends such as further flame retardant formulations of intumescent flame retardants, and flame retardancy and physical properties after repeated extrusion assuming recycling.
