■Book overview
Sammy the swallow flies around the world. He has a human friend named Hiroshi in Ishinomaki. Ishinomaki is home to one of the murals created by the Over the Wall project, and Winnie, the whale in the painting, introduces Sammy to friends in murals from all over the world. Sammy travels around the world, and in Ecuador, he meets Tiny the
hummingbird and hears the story of a sad prisoner who committed a crime because of his poverty. It is said that although you cannot drink the nectar from the flowers in the painting, the flowers can bloom in people’s hearts. In Timor-Leste, he meets Felix the crocodile and learns about the importance of the sun and how it gives life to people. I learned that the sun is painted on the walls of hospitals as a symbol of protecting life. Sammy then flies to Ukraine. There, Kira the seagull is there, and they hear a folk tale from Ukraine about how various animals warm up inside a glove dropped by a traveler, and that warmth creates peace. Sammy returns to Ishinomaki and talks to Winnie. Winnie tells them that there was once a large tsunami in Ishinomaki, and they learn that nature sometimes shows its fangs. Hiroshi hears from Sammy about murals around the world and draws flowers,
hummingbirds, and crocodiles in his sketchbook. Then other swallows arrive and tell them that there is a war going on in Ukraine. The mural in Ukraine is damaged and the animals in the glove appear to be gone. The animals are at a loss, and Tiny the hummingbird tries his best to put out the fire by taking a drop of water into his mouth. Hiroshi, who doesn’t have wings, feels at a loss because he can’t do anything. However, what were the words that turned Sammy the Swallow into Hiroshi?
